who has good friends, this is to be expected – he will develop the noble eight-factored path, he will cultivate the noble eight-factored path. And how, bhikkhus, does a monk who has good friends develop the noble eight-factored path, cultivate the noble eight-factored path? Here, bhikkhus, a monk develops right view, supported by seclusion, supported by dispassion, supported by cessation… dependent on seclusion, culminating in relinquishment... ...develops right concentration, dependent on seclusion, dependent on dispassion, dependent on cessation, culminating in relinquishment. Thus, monks, a monk who has good friends develops the noble eightfold path, makes the noble eightfold path abundant. The First. One thing, monks, is very helpful for the arising of the noble eightfold path. What is that one thing? That is – accomplishment in virtue... ...that is – accomplishment in desire... ...that is – accomplishment in self... ...that is – accomplishment in view... ...that is – accomplishment in heedfulness. The Sixth. That is – accomplishment in wise attention. For a monk, monks, who is accomplished in wise attention, this is to be expected: he will develop the noble eightfold path, he will make the noble eightfold path abundant. And how, monks, does a monk accomplished in wise attention develop the noble eightfold path, make the noble eightfold path abundant? Thus, monks, a monk who has good friends develops the Noble Eightfold Path, makes much of the Noble Eightfold Path. The First. 2-6. And how, monks, does a monk accomplished in appropriate attention develop the Noble Eightfold Path, cultivate the Noble Eightfold Path? Here, monks, a monk develops right view dependent on seclusion... ...he develops right concentration dependent on seclusion, dependent on dispassion, dependent on cessation... leading to relinquishment, culminating in letting go. Thus, monks, a monk endowed with proper attention develops the Noble Eightfold Path, makes the Noble Eightfold Path abundant. The Seventh. 1. Discourse on Good Friendship Monks, I do not see any other single quality by which the Noble Eightfold Path, if not arisen, arises, or, if arisen, goes to the fulfillment of development, as this, monks, good friendship. It is to be expected, monks, of a monk with good friends that he will develop the Noble Eightfold Path, that he will make the Noble Eightfold Path abundant. And how, monks, does a monk with good friends develop the Noble Eightfold Path, make the Noble Eightfold Path abundant? Here, monks, a monk develops right view culminating in the removal of passion, culminating in the removal of aversion, culminating in the removal of delusion... ...he develops right concentration culminating in the removal of passion, culminating in the removal of aversion, culminating in the removal of delusion. Thus, monks, a monk with good friends develops the Noble Eightfold Path, makes the Noble Eightfold Path abundant. The First. 2-6. The Quintet of Discourses on Accomplishment in Virtue, etc. Monks, I do not see any other single quality by which the Noble Eightfold Path, if not arisen, arises, or, if arisen, goes to the fulfillment of development, as this, monks, accomplishment in virtue... ...as this, monks, accomplishment in desire... ...as this, monks, accomplishment in self... ...as this, monks, accomplishment in view... ...as this, monks, accomplishment in heedfulness. It is to be expected, monks, of a monk endowed with accomplishment in proper attention that he will develop the Noble Eightfold Path will develop it, will make much of the Noble Eightfold Path. And how, monks, does a monk endowed with proper attention develop the Noble Eightfold Path, make much of the Noble Eightfold Path? Here, monks, a monk develops right view, ending in the removal of passion, ending in the removal of aversion, ending in the removal of delusion; ... develops right concentration, ending in the removal of passion, ending in the removal of aversion, ending in the removal of delusion. Thus, monks, a monk endowed with proper attention develops the Noble Eightfold Path, makes much of the Noble Eightfold Path. The Seventh.
