When this was said, Citta the householder's friends, ministers, relatives, and kinsmen said this to Citta the householder: "Establish mindfulness, dear sir, do not babble." "What did I say that you say this to me: 'Establish mindfulness, dear sir, do not babble'?" "Indeed, dear sir, you said this: 'That too is impermanent, that too is unstable, that too is to be abandoned and gone beyond.'" "But indeed to me, the park deities, forest deities, tree deities, deities dwelling in herbs, grasses, and shrubs, said this: 'Make a wish, householder, for the future time, may you be a Wheel-turning monarch.' To them I said this: 'That too is impermanent, that too is unstable, that too is to be abandoned and gone beyond.'" "But what, dear sir, did those park deities, forest deities, tree deities, deities dwelling in herbs, grasses, and shrubs, seeing some benefit, say this: 'Make a wish, householder, for the future time, may you be a Wheel-turning monarch'?" "Indeed, to those park deities, forest deities, tree deities, deities dwelling in herbs, grasses, and shrubs, it occurred thus: 'This Citta the householder is virtuous, of good conduct. If he makes a wish: "For the future time, may I be a Wheel-turning monarch," indeed, this will succeed for him. Because the mental aspiration of a virtuous person is pure, it sees a righteous, righteous fruit.' Indeed, seeing this benefit, those park deities, forest deities, tree deities, deities dwelling in herbs, grasses, and shrubs, said this: 'Make a wish, householder, for the future time, may you be a Wheel-turning monarch.' To them I said this: 'T..." 'This too is impermanent, this too is unstable, this too must be abandoned and gone.' "Then, dear son, instruct us too!" "Therefore, you should train yourselves thus: 'We shall be endowed with unwavering faith in the Buddha: 'Indeed, that Blessed One is Arahant, Perfectly Self-Awakened, endowed with knowledge and conduct, well-gone, knower of the worlds, unsurpassed leader of persons to be tamed, teacher of devas and humans, Awakened, Blessed.' We shall be endowed with unwavering faith in the Dhamma: 'The Dhamma is well-proclaimed by the Blessed One, visible here and now, timeless, inviting inspection, leading inwards, to be experienced individually by the wise.' We shall be endowed with unwavering faith in the Saṅgha: 'The Saṅgha of the Blessed One's disciples is practicing well, the Saṅgha of the Blessed One's disciples is practicing uprightly, the Saṅgha of the Blessed One's disciples is practicing insightfully, the Saṅgha of the Blessed One's disciples is practicing properly; that is, the four pairs of persons, the eight individual persons— this Saṅgha of the Blessed One's disciples is worthy of offerings, worthy of hospitality, worthy of gifts, worthy of reverential salutation, the unsurpassed field of merit for the world.' Whatever gift there is in the family, all that will be shared with the virtuous, those of good character. Thus indeed should you train yourselves." Then Citta the householder, having established his friends, ministers, relatives, and kinsmen in the Buddha, Dhamma, Saṅgha, and generosity, passed away. The tenth. The Citta Saṃyutta is concluded. Its summary: Two fetters, Isidatta, Mahaka, and Kamabhu; Godatta and Nigaṇṭha, and seeing the sick with the naked ascetic.
