Discourse on Stability, Rooted in Attainments 672. At Sāvatthī. "Bhikkhus, there are these four Monks, there are meditators. Which four? Here, monks, some meditator is skilled in entering concentration, but not skilled in remaining in concentration. But here, monks, some meditator is skilled in remaining in concentration, but not skilled in entering concentration. But here, monks, some meditator is neither skilled in entering concentration, nor skilled in remaining in concentration. But here, monks, some meditator is skilled in entering concentration, and skilled in remaining in concentration. Among these, monks, that meditator who is skilled in entering concentration and skilled in remaining in concentration, he is the chief, the best, the foremost, the highest, the most excellent of these four meditators. Here, monks, some meditator is skilled in entering concentration, but not skilled in emerging from concentration. But here, monks, some meditator is skilled in emerging from concentration, but not skilled in entering concentration. But here, monks, some meditator is neither skilled in entering concentration, nor skilled in emerging from concentration. But here, monks, some meditator is skilled in entering concentration, and skilled in emerging from concentration. Among these, monks, that meditator... (and so on)... the most excellent." The Twelfth. 13. The Discourse on Readiness, Rooted in Attainment 674. At Sāvatthī. "Monks, there are meditators. Which four? Here, monks, some meditator is skilled in entering concentration, but not skilled in readiness for concentration. But here, monks, some meditator is skilled in readiness for concentration, but not skilled in entering concentration. But here, monks, some meditator is neither skilled in entering concentration, nor skilled in... He is skilled in entering, but not skilled in making concentration suitable. Here again, monks, a certain meditator is skilled in entering concentration, and skilled in making concentration suitable. Among these... he is the best. Thirteenth. 14. The Discourse on Diligence Based on Attainment 678. At Sāvatthī. "These four, monks, are meditators. Which four? Here, monks, some meditator is skillful in entering concentration, not diligent in concentration. Here, monks, however, some meditator is diligent in concentration, not skillful in entering concentration. Here, monks, however, some meditator is neither skillful in entering concentration, nor diligent in concentration. Here, monks, however, some meditator is skillful in entering concentration, and diligent in concentration. Among these... the best. The seventeenth. 18. The Discourse on Persistence Based on Attainment 679. At Sāvatthī. "These four, monks, are meditators. Which four? Here, monks, some meditator is skillful in entering concentration, not persistent in concentration. Here, monks, however, some meditator is persistent in concentration, not skillful in entering concentration. Here, monks, however, some meditator is neither skillful in entering concentration, nor persistent in concentration. Here, monks, however, some meditator is skillful in entering concentration, and persistent in concentration. Among these... the best. The eighteenth. 19. The Discourse on Suitability Based on Attainment 680. At Sāvatthī. "These four, monks, are meditators. Which four? Here, monks, some meditator is skillful in entering concentration, not acting suitably in concentration. Here, monks, however, some meditator is acting suitably in concentration, not skillful in entering concentration. skilled in attainment. Here again, bhikkhus, some meditator is neither skilled in entering concentration, nor skilled in making it suitable. Here again, bhikkhus, some meditator is skilled in entering concentration, and skilled in making it suitable. Among these, bhikkhus, that meditator who is skilled in entering concentration and skilled in making it suitable, he is among these four meditators the foremost, the best, the chief, the highest, the most excellent. Just as, bhikkhus, from a cow, milk; from milk, curds; from curds, fresh butter; from fresh butter, ghee; from ghee, cream of ghee— that is called the foremost; even so, bhikkhus, that meditator who is skilled in entering concentration and skilled in making it suitable, he is among these four meditators the foremost, the best, the chief, the highest, the most excellent. The Nineteenth. (Rooted in Attainment.) At Sāvatthī. "There are these four, bhikkhus, meditators. Which four? Here, bhikkhus, some meditator is skilled in the stability of concentration, but not skilled in emerging from concentration. Here again, bhikkhus, some meditator is skilled in emerging from concentration, but not skilled in the stability of concentration. Here again, bhikkhus, some meditator is neither skilled in the stability of concentration, nor skilled in emerging from concentration. Here again, bhikkhus, some meditator is skilled in the stability of concentration, and skilled in emerging from concentration. Among these, bhikkhus, that meditator... ...the highest, the most excellent. The Twentieth. At Sāvatthī. "There are these four, bhikkhus, meditators. Which four? Here, bhikkhus, some meditator is skilled in emerging from concentration... is not skilled, not skilled in the preparation of concentration... is skilled in the preparation of concentration, not skilled in emerging from concentration... is neither skilled in emerging from concentration, nor skilled in the preparation of concentration... is skilled in emerging from concentration and skilled in the preparation of concentration. Among these, bhikkhus, this meditator... is supreme and excellent. The twenty-eighth. The six suttas beginning with the Sutta on the Root of Preparation and Object 696-701. At Sāvatthī... is skilled in the preparation of concentration, not skilled in the object of concentration... is skilled in the object of concentration, not skilled in the preparation of concentration... is neither skilled in the preparation of concentration, nor skilled in the object of concentration... is skilled in the preparation of concentration and skilled in the object of concentration. Among these, bhikkhus, this meditator... is supreme and excellent. The thirty-fifth. (Like the previous root texts, six suttas up to the fortieth, the Sutta on the Root of Preparation and Suitable Actions, should be completed. The Root of Preparation.) 41-45. The five suttas beginning with the Sutta on the Root of Object and Range 702-706. At Sāvatthī... is skilled in the object of concentration, not skilled in the range of concentration... is skilled in the range of concentration, not skilled in the object of concentration... is neither skilled in the object of concentration, nor skilled in the range of concentration... is skilled in the object of concentration and skilled in the range of concentration. Among these, bhikkhus, this meditator... is supreme and excellent. The forty-first.
