11. The Cloud Devas Chapter 1. The Simple Discourse 550. At Sāvatthī. "Monks, I will teach you about the cloud-bodied devas. Listen to that. And who, monks, are the cloud-bodied devas? There are, monks, cold-cloud devas; there are hot-cloud devas; there are thunder-cloud devas; there are wind-cloud devas; there are rain-cloud devas – these, monks, are called 'cloud-bodied devas'." The First. 2. The Good Conduct Discourse 551. At Sāvatthī. Seated to one side, a certain monk said to the Blessed One: "What, venerable sir, is the reason, what is the cause, by which some individual, with the breaking up of the body, after death, reappears in the company of the cloud-bodied devas?" "Here, monk, some individual performs good conduct in body, performs good conduct in speech, performs good conduct in mind. He hears: 'The cloud-bodied devas are long-lived, beautiful, and abound in happiness.' He thinks: 'Oh, if only I, with the breaking up of the body, after death, might reappear in the company of the cloud-bodied devas!' He, with the breaking up of the body, after death, reappears in the company of the cloud-bodied devas. This, monk, is the reason, this is the cause, by which some individual, with the breaking up of the body, after death, reappears in the company of the cloud-bodied devas." The Second. 3-12. The Ten Discourses on the Benefit of Giving to Cold-Cloud Devas 552-561. At Sāvatthī. Seated to one side, a certain monk said to the Blessed One: "What, venerable sir, is the reason, what is the cause, by which some individual, with the breaking up of the body, after death, reappears in the company of the cold-cloud devas?" "Here, monk, some individual performs good conduct in body, performs good conduct in speech, performs good conduct in mind. He hears: 'The cold-cloud devas are long-lived, beautiful, and abound in happiness.' He thinks: 'Oh, if only I, with the breaking up of the body, after death... 'May I be reborn among the Cold-Cloud devas.' He gives food... he gives lamps. He, with the breaking up of the body, after death, is reborn among the Cold-Cloud devas. This, indeed, monk, is the cause, this is the reason, by which some individual, with the breaking up of the body, after death, is reborn among the Cold-Cloud devas. The Twelfth. 13-52. The Forty Discourses on Giving and Support for the Hot-Cloud Devas. 562-601. Occasion at Sāvatthī. Seated to one side, that monk said to the Blessed One: "What, indeed, venerable sir, is the cause, what is the reason, by which some individual, with the breaking up of the body, after death, is reborn among the Hot-Cloud devas... among the Rain-Cloud devas... among the Wind-Cloud devas... among the Rain-Cloud devas?" "Here, monk, some individual performs good conduct by body, performs good conduct by speech, performs good conduct by mind. He hears: 'The Rain-Cloud devas are long-lived, beautiful, and abound in happiness.' He thinks thus: 'Oh, may I, with the breaking up of the body, after death, be reborn among the Rain-Cloud devas.' He gives food... he gives lamps. He, with the breaking up of the body, after death, is reborn among the Rain-Cloud devas. This, indeed, monk, is the cause, this is the reason, by which some individual, with the breaking up of the body, after death, is reborn among the Rain-Cloud devas." The Fifty-Second. 53. The Discourse on Cold Clouds. 602. Occasion at Sāvatthī. Seated to one side, that monk said to the Blessed One: "What, indeed, venerable sir, is the cause, what is the reason, by which it is sometimes cold?" "There are, monk, devas named Cold-Clouds. When it occurs to them thus: 'Let us now dwell in our own delight,' then, following that mental resolve, it becomes cold for them. This, indeed, monk, is the cause, This is the reason, why it is sometimes cold." The fifty-third. 54. Discourse on Hot Clouds The origin is Sāvatthī. Seated to one side, that bhikkhu said this to the Blessed One: "What, venerable sir, is the cause, what is the reason, why it is sometimes hot?" "There are, bhikkhu, devas named 'Hot Clouds'. When it occurs to them thus: 'Let us now dwell in our own delight,' then, following that mental resolve of theirs, it becomes hot. This, bhikkhu, is the cause, this is the reason, why it is sometimes hot." The fifty-fourth. 55. Discourse on Cloudy Clouds The origin is Sāvatthī. Seated to one side, that bhikkhu said this to the Blessed One: "What, venerable sir, is the cause, what is the reason, why it is sometimes cloudy?" "There are, bhikkhu, devas named 'Cloudy Clouds'. When it occurs to them thus: 'Let us now dwell in our own delight,' then, following that mental resolve of theirs, it becomes cloudy. This, bhikkhu, is the cause, this is the reason, why it is sometimes cloudy." The fifty-fifth. 56. Discourse on Wind Clouds The origin is Sāvatthī. Seated to one side, that bhikkhu said this to the Blessed One: "What, venerable sir, is the cause, what is the reason, why there is sometimes wind?" "There are, bhikkhu, devas named 'Wind Clouds'. When it occurs to them thus: 'Let us now dwell in our own delight,' then, following that mental resolve of theirs, there is wind. This, bhikkhu, is the cause, this is the reason, why there is sometimes wind." The fifty-sixth. 57. Discourse on Rain Clouds The origin is Sāvatthī. Seated to one side, that bhikkhu said this to the Blessed One: "What, venerable sir, is the cause, what is the reason, why it sometimes rains?" "There are, bhikkhu, devas named 'Rain Clouds'. When it occurs to them thus: 'Let us now dwell in our own delight,' then, following that mental resolve of theirs, it rains. This, bhikkhu, is the cause, this is the condition, whereby sometimes it rains.” The fifty-seventh. The fifty-seventh discourse is concluded. The Saṃyutta on Clouds is completed. Its summary – The Pure, and Good Conduct, Fifty on Giving and Help; Cold, and Hot, and Cloud, Wind, Rain, and Clouds.
