The Gandhabba Deva Collection 1. The Simple Discourse 438. At one time The Blessed One was staying at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's monastery. ... The Blessed One said this: "Monks, I will teach you about the Gandhabba devas. Listen to that. And who, monks, are the Gandhabba devas? Monks, there are devas dwelling in root-scents. Monks, there are devas dwelling in heartwood-scents. Monks, there are devas dwelling in sapwood-scents. Monks, there are devas dwelling in bark-scents. Monks, there are devas dwelling in flake-scents. Monks, there are devas dwelling in leaf-scents. Monks, there are devas dwelling in flower-scents. Monks, there are devas dwelling in fruit-scents. Monks, there are devas dwelling in sap-scents. Monks, there are devas dwelling in scent-scents. These, monks, are called the Gandhabba devas." The First. 2. The Discourse on Good Conduct 439. At Sāvatthī. Seated to one side, a certain monk said this to the Blessed One: "What, venerable sir, is the reason, what is the cause, by which some person here, with the breaking up of the body, after death, reappears in the company of the Gandhabba devas?" "Here, monk, some person practices good conduct in body, practices good conduct in speech, practices good conduct in mind. He hears: 'The Gandhabba devas are long-lived, beautiful, and abound in happiness.' He thinks: 'Oh, if only I, with the breaking up of the body, after death, might reappear in the company of the Gandhabba devas!' So he, with the breaking up of the body, after death, reappears in the company of the Gandhabba devas. This, monk, is the reason, this is the cause, by which some person here, with the breaking up of the body, after death, reappears in the company of the Gandhabba devas." The Second. 3. The Discourse on the Giver of Root-Scents 440. At Sāvatthī. Seated to one side, n Then that monk, seated, said to the Blessed One: "What, venerable sir, is the reason, what is the cause, whereby some individual, with the breaking up of the body, after death, is reborn into the companionship of the devas dwelling in root fragrances?" "Here, monk, some individual practices good conduct in body, practices good conduct in speech, practices good conduct in mind. He hears: 'The devas dwelling in root fragrances are long-lived, beautiful, and abundant in happiness.' He thinks thus: 'Oh, may I, with the breaking up of the body, after death, be reborn into the companionship of the devas dwelling in root fragrances!' He is a giver of root fragrances. He, with the breaking up of the body, after death, is reborn into the companionship of the devas dwelling in root fragrances. This, monk, is the reason... and so on... whereby some individual, with the breaking up of the body, after death, is reborn into the companionship of the devas dwelling in root fragrances." The third. 4-12. The Nine Discourses on Givers of Heartwood Fragrances, etc. 441-449. Occasion at Sāvatthī. Then that monk, seated at one side, said to the Blessed One: "What, venerable sir, is the reason, what is the cause, whereby some individual, with the breaking up of the body, after death, is reborn into the companionship of the devas dwelling in heartwood fragrances... the devas dwelling in sapwood fragrances... the devas dwelling in bark fragrances... the devas dwelling in flake fragrances... the devas dwelling in leaf fragrances... the devas dwelling in flower fragrances... the devas dwelling in fruit fragrances... the devas dwelling in sap fragrances... the devas dwelling in perfume fragrances?" "Here, monk, some individual practices good conduct in body, practices good conduct in speech, practices good conduct in mind. He hears: 'The devas dwelling in heartwood fragrances are long-lived, beautiful, and abundant in happiness.' He thinks thus: 'Oh, may I, with the breaking up of the body, after death, be reborn into the companionship of the devas dwelling in heartwood fragrances... the devas dwelling in sapwood fragrances... of the gods dwelling in bark-fragrances… of the gods dwelling in peel-fragrances… of the gods dwelling in leaf-fragrances… of the gods dwelling in flower-fragrances… of the gods dwelling in fruit-fragrances… of the gods dwelling in sap-fragrances… of the gods dwelling in fragrance-fragrances. He is a giver of heartwood-fragrances… He is a giver of sapwood-fragrances… He is a giver of bark-fragrances… He is a giver of peel-fragrances… He is a giver of leaf-fragrances… He is a giver of flower-fragrances… He is a giver of fruit-fragrances… He is a giver of sap-fragrances… He is a giver of fragrance-fragrances. Upon the breaking up of the body, after death, he is reborn in the companionship of the gods dwelling in fragrance-fragrances. This, bhikkhu, is the reason, this is the cause, whereby some individual, upon the breaking up of the body, after death, is reborn in the companionship of the gods dwelling in fragrance-fragrances.” The Twelfth. 13-22. The Decad of Discourses on the Benefits of Giving Root-Fragrances 450-459. At Sāvatthī. Seated to one side, that bhikkhu said to the Blessed One: “What, venerable sir, is the reason, what is the cause, whereby some individual, upon the breaking up of the body, after death, is reborn in the companionship of the gods dwelling in root-fragrances?” “Here, bhikkhu, some individual performs good conduct in body, performs good conduct in speech, performs good conduct in mind. He hears: ‘The gods dwelling in root-fragrances are long-lived, beautiful, and abundant in happiness.’ He thinks: ‘Oh, that I, upon the breaking up of the body, after death, might be reborn in the companionship of the gods dwelling in root-fragrances!’ He gives food… He gives drink… He gives clothing… He gives conveyances… He gives garlands… He gives fragrances… He gives ointments… He gives beds… He gives dwellings… He gives lamps. Upon the breaking up of the body, after death, he is reborn in the companionship of the gods dwelling in root-fragrances. This O, monk, this is the cause, this is the reason, whereby some individual here, with the breaking up of the body, after death, is reborn into companionship with the devas dwelling in root fragrances. The twenty-second. 23-112. The Ninety Discourses on the Benefits of Giving Heartwood Fragrances and So Forth 460-549. At Sāvatthī. Seated to one side, that monk said to the Blessed One: ‘What, venerable sir, is the cause, what is the reason, whereby some individual here, with the breaking up of the body, after death, is reborn into companionship with the devas dwelling in heartwood fragrances… with the devas dwelling in sapwood fragrances… with the devas dwelling in bark fragrances… with the devas dwelling in flake fragrances… with the devas dwelling in leaf fragrances… with the devas dwelling in flower fragrances… with the devas dwelling in fruit fragrances… with the devas dwelling in sap fragrances… with the devas dwelling in scent fragrances?’ ‘Here, monk, some individual performs good conduct in body, performs good conduct in speech, performs good conduct in mind. He hears: ‘The devas dwelling in scent fragrances are long-lived, beautiful, and abundant in happiness.’ He thinks thus: ‘Oh, may I, with the breaking up of the body, after death, be reborn into companionship with the devas dwelling in scent fragrances!’ He gives food, he gives drink, he gives clothing, he gives vehicles, he gives garlands, he gives scents, he gives ointments, he gives beds, he gives dwellings, he gives lamps. This, monk, is the cause, this is the reason, whereby some individual here, with the breaking up of the body, after death, is reborn into companionship with the devas dwelling in scent fragrances.’ The one hundred and twelfth.
