who are running on, who are transmigrating. Thus for a long time, monks, have you experienced suffering, experienced pain, experienced misfortune, the charnel ground has grown. Enough, monks, to be disenchanted with all formations, enough to be dispassionate, enough to be liberated. The Ninth. 10. The Vepulla Mountain Sutta 143. At one time the Blessed One was staying at Rājagaha, on Vulture Peak Mountain. There the Blessed One addressed the monks— "Monks!" "Venerable sir," those monks replied to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said this: "Without discoverable beginning, monks, is this samsara. A first point is not known of beings hindered by ignorance, fettered by craving, who are running on, who are transmigrating. Formerly, monks, this Vepulla Mountain was known as 'Pācīnavaṃsa'. And at that time, monks, humans were known as 'Tivarā'. The lifespan of Tivarā humans, monks, was forty thousand years. Tivarā humans, monks, ascended Pācīnavaṃsa Mountain in four days, and descended in four days. And at that time, monks, the Blessed One Kakusandha, the Arahant, the Perfectly Self-Enlightened One, had arisen in the world. The Blessed One Kakusandha, the Arahant, the Perfectly Self-Enlightened One, had a pair of chief disciples named Vidhurasañjīva, an excellent, auspicious pair. See, monks, that name of this mountain has vanished, and those humans have passed away, and that Blessed One has attained final Nibbāna. Thus impermanent, monks, are formations; thus unstable, monks, are formations; thus without solace, monks, are formations. Enough, monks, to be disenchanted with all formations, enough to be dispassionate, enough to be liberated. Formerly, monks, For this Vepulla mountain, the name 'Vaṅkaka' arose. At that time, monks, for humans, the name 'Rohitassa' arose. For Rohitassa humans, monks, the lifespan was thirty thousand years. Rohitassa humans, monks, ascended Vaṅkaka mountain in three days, descended in three days. At that time, monks, the Blessed One Koṇāgamana, Arahant, Perfectly Self-Awakened One, appeared in the world. For the Blessed One Koṇāgamana, monks, Arahant, Perfectly Self-Awakened One, there was a pair of disciples named Bhiyyosuttara, the foremost excellent pair. See, monks, that name of this mountain has disappeared, those humans have passed away, and that Blessed One has attained final Nibbāna. Thus impermanent, monks, are formations... enough to be liberated. Formerly, monks, for this Vepulla mountain, the name 'Supassa' arose. At that time, monks, for humans, the name 'Suppiyā' arose. For Suppiyā humans, monks, the lifespan was twenty thousand years. Suppiyā humans, monks, ascended Supassa mountain in two days, descended in two days. At that time, monks, the Blessed One Kassapa, Arahant, Perfectly Self-Awakened One, appeared in the world. For the Blessed One Kassapa, monks, Arahant, Perfectly Self-Awakened One, there was a pair of disciples named Tissabhāradvāja, the foremost excellent pair. See, monks, that name of this mountain has disappeared, those humans have passed away, and that Blessed One has attained final Nibbāna. Thus impermanent, monks, are formations; thus unstable, monks, are formations... enough to be liberated. But now, monks, for this Vepulla mountain, the name 'Vepulla' has arisen. But now, monks, for these humans... the designation 'Magadhans' arose. The lifespan of Magadhan people, monks, is short, limited, swift; whoever lives long, lives a hundred years, or a little more. Magadhan people, monks, ascend Mount Vepulla in a moment, descend in a moment. But now, monks, I, an Arahant, a Fully Enlightened One, have arisen in the world. And I, monks, have a pair of disciples named Sāriputta and Moggallāna, a foremost, blessed pair. There will come a time, monks, when the designation of this mountain will disappear, and these people will pass away, and I too will attain Parinibbāna. Thus impermanent, monks, are formations; thus unstable, monks, are formations; thus unreliable, monks, are formations. To this extent, monks, it is enough to be disenchanted with all formations, enough to be dispassionate, enough to be liberated. This the Blessed One said. Having said this, the Fortunate One, the Teacher, then spoke further: "Pācīnavaṃsa for the Tivarā, Rohitassa for the Vaṅkaka; Supassa for the Suppiyā, and Vepulla for the Magadhans. "Impermanent indeed are formations, of the nature to arise and pass away; having arisen, they cease; their appeasement is bliss." The Tenth. The Second Chapter. Its Summary: Duggata and Sukhita, and with thirty mothers and fathers; Brother, sister, son, and daughter, Mount Vepulla. The Anamatagga Saṃyutta is finished.
