Listen to it, pay careful attention; I shall speak." "Yes, venerable sir," those monks replied to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said this: "And what, monks, is the diversity of elements? The eye-element, the form-element, the eye-consciousness-element; the ear-element, the sound-element, the ear-consciousness-element; the nose-element, the smell-element, the nose-consciousness-element; the tongue-element, the taste-element, the tongue-consciousness-element; the body-element, the touch-element, the body-consciousness-element; the mind-element, the phenomena-element, the mind-consciousness-element – this is called, monks, the diversity of elements." The First. 2. Discourse on the Diversity of Contact 86. Resides at Sāvatthī… "Dependent on the diversity of elements, monks, arises the diversity of contact. And what, monks, is the diversity of elements? The eye-element, the ear-element, the nose-element, the tongue-element, the body-element, the mind-element – this is called, monks, the diversity of elements." Not dependent on the desire for mental phenomena, arises the intention for mental phenomena. Not dependent on the intention for mental phenomena, arises the perception of mental phenomena. Not dependent on the perception of mental phenomena, arises the element of mental phenomena. Thus, monks, dependent on the diversity of elements, arises the diversity of perceptions.
