"What do you think, Rahula, are mental phenomena permanent or impermanent?" "Impermanent, venerable sir." "But what is impermanent, is that suffering or happiness?" "Suffering, venerable sir." "But what is impermanent, suffering, subject to change, is it fitting to regard that as – 'This is mine, this I am, this is my self'?" "No, venerable sir." "What do you think, Rahula, is mind-consciousness permanent or impermanent?" "Impermanent, venerable sir." "But what is impermanent, is that suffering or happiness?" "Suffering, venerable sir." Bhante." "But what is impermanent, suffering, subject to change, is it fit to regard it thus: 'This is mine, this I am, this is my self'?" "No, Bhante." "What do you think, Rahula, is mental contact permanent or impermanent?" "Impermanent, Bhante." "But what is impermanent, is it suffering or happiness?" "Suffering, Bhante." "But what is impermanent, suffering, subject to change, is it fit to regard it thus: 'This is mine, this I am, this is my self'?" "No, Bhante." "What do you think, Rahula, that which arises dependent on mental contact: feeling, perception, volitional formations, consciousness, is that also permanent or impermanent?" "Impermanent, Bhante." "But what is impermanent, is it suffering or happiness?" "Suffering, Bhante." "But what is impermanent, suffering, subject to change, is it fit to regard it thus: 'This is mine, this I am, this is my self'?" "No, Bhante." 419. "Seeing thus, Rahula, the instructed noble disciple becomes disenchanted with the eye, becomes disenchanted with forms, becomes disenchanted with eye-consciousness, becomes disenchanted with eye-contact, becomes disenchanted with that which arises dependent on eye-contact: feeling, perception, volitional formations, consciousness. He becomes disenchanted with the ear, becomes disenchanted with sounds... He becomes disenchanted with the nose, becomes disenchanted with smells... He becomes disenchanted with the tongue, becomes disenchanted with tastes... He becomes disenchanted with the body, becomes disenchanted with tactile objects... He becomes disenchanted with the mind, becomes disenchanted with mental objects, becomes disenchanted with mind-consciousness, becomes disenchanted with mind-contact, becomes disenchanted with that which arises dependent on mind-contact: feeling, perception, volitional formations, consciousness. Being disenchanted, he becomes dispassionate. Through dispassion, he is liberated. When liberated, there is the knowledge: 'Liberated.' He understands: 'Birth is destroyed, the holy life has been lived, What was to be done has been done, There is no further state of being for this, thus he understands. This the Blessed One said. Delighted, Venerable Rāhula rejoiced in the Blessed One's words. And while this explanation was being spoken, Venerable Rāhula's mind was liberated from the defilements, without clinging. And for many thousands of deities, the dust-free, stain-free Eye of Dhamma arose – "Whatever is of the nature to arise, all that is of the nature to cease." The Cūḷarāhulovāda Sutta, the fifth, is finished. 6. The Discourse on the Six Sixes 420. Thus have I heard – At one time the Blessed One was staying in Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's monastery. There the Blessed One addressed the bhikkhus, saying: "Bhikkhus!" "Venerable sir," those bhikkhus replied to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said this: "Bhikkhus, I will teach you the Dhamma, beautiful in the beginning, beautiful in the middle, beautiful in the end, with meaning and with phrasing, I will proclaim the utterly complete and purified holy life, namely – the six sixes. Listen to it, attend carefully; I will speak." "Yes, Venerable sir," those bhikkhus replied to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said this: "Six internal sense bases are to be known, six external sense bases are to be known, six bodies of consciousness are to be known, six bodies of contact are to be known, six bodies of feeling are to be known, six bodies of craving are to be known. 421. "'Six internal sense bases are to be known' – thus it has been said. In reference to what was this said? The eye sense base, the ear sense base, the nose sense base, the tongue sense base, the body sense base, the mind sense base. That which was said: 'Six internal sense bases are to be known' – it was said in reference to this. This is the first six. "'Six external sense bases are to be known' – thus it has been said. In reference to what was this said? The form sense base, the sound sense base, the smell sense base, the taste sense base, the tangible sense base, the mind-object base. "Six external bases are to be known" – that which was said, it was said with reference to this. This is the second six. "Six consciousness-bodies are to be known" – this, indeed, was said. With reference to what was it said? Dependent on the eye and forms, eye-consciousness arises; dependent on the ear and sounds, ear-consciousness arises; dependent on the nose and odors, nose-consciousness arises; dependent on the tongue and tastes, tongue-consciousness arises; dependent on the body and tangibles, body-consciousness arises; dependent on the mind and mind-objects, mind-consciousness arises. "Six consciousness-bodies are to be known" – that which was said, it was said with reference to this. This is the third six. "Six contact-bodies are to be known" – this, indeed, was said. With reference to what was it said? Dependent on the eye and forms, eye-consciousness arises; the meeting of the three is contact. Dependent on the ear and sounds, ear-consciousness arises; the meeting of the three is contact. Dependent on the nose and odors, nose-consciousness arises; the meeting of the three is contact. Dependent on the tongue and tastes, tongue-consciousness arises; the meeting of the three is contact. Dependent on the body and tangibles, body-consciousness arises; the meeting of the three is contact. Dependent on the mind and mind-objects, mind-consciousness arises; the meeting of the three is contact. "Six contact-bodies are to be known" – that which was said, it was said with reference to this. This is the fourth six. "Six feeling-bodies are to be known" – this, indeed, was said. With reference to what was it said? Dependent on the eye and forms, eye-consciousness arises; the meeting of the three is contact; with contact as condition, feeling arises. Dependent on the ear and sounds, ear-consciousness arises; the meeting of the three is contact; with contact as condition, feeling arises. Dependent on the nose and odors, nose-consciousness arises; the meeting of the three is contact; with contact as condition, feeling arises. Dependent on the tongue and tastes, tongue-consciousness arises; the meeting of the three is contact; with contact as condition, feeling arises. Dependent on the body and tangibles, body-consciousness arises; the meeting of the three is contact; with contact as condition, feeling arises. Dependent on the mind and mind-objects, mind-consciousness arises; the meeting of the three is contact; with contact as condition, feeling arises. from it, feeling. Depending on the tongue and flavors, tongue-consciousness arises. The meeting of the three is contact. Conditioned by contact, feeling arises. Depending on the body and tangibles, body-consciousness arises. The meeting of the three is contact. Conditioned by contact, feeling arises. Depending on the mind and mental phenomena, mind-consciousness arises. The meeting of the three is contact. Conditioned by contact, feeling arises. "Six classes of feeling are to be known" – that which was said, it was said with reference to this. This is the fifth six. "Six classes of craving are to be known" – this too was said. With reference to what was it said? Depending on the eye and forms, eye-consciousness arises. The meeting of the three is contact. Conditioned by contact, feeling arises. Conditioned by feeling, craving arises. Depending on the ear and sounds, ear-consciousness arises... Depending on the nose and odors, nose-consciousness arises... Depending on the tongue and flavors, tongue-consciousness arises... Depending on the body and tangibles, body-consciousness arises... Depending on the mind and mental phenomena, mind-consciousness arises. The meeting of the three is contact. Conditioned by contact, feeling arises. Conditioned by feeling, craving arises. "Six classes of craving are to be known" – that which was said, it was said with reference to this. This is the sixth six. 422. "If anyone should say 'The eye is self,' that is not tenable. The arising and passing away of the eye are discerned. For that whose arising and passing away are discerned, it would follow for him, 'My self arises and passes away.' Therefore, that is not tenable – if anyone should say 'The eye is self.' Thus, the eye is not-self. "If anyone should say 'Forms are self,' that is not tenable. The arising and passing away of forms are discerned. For that whose arising and passing away are discerned, it would follow for him, 'My self arises and passes away.' Therefore, that is not tenable – if anyone should say 'Forms are self.' Thus, the eye is not-self, forms are not-self. "If anyone should say 'Eye-consciousness is self,' that is not tenable. It occurs. The arising and passing away of eye-consciousness is discerned. For whomsoever the arising and passing away is discerned, to him it comes thus: 'My self arises and passes away.' Therefore, it does not hold true for whoever would say 'eye-consciousness is self'. Thus, the eye is not-self, forms are not-self, eye-consciousness is not-self. Whoever would say 'eye-contact is self', that does not hold true. The arising and passing away of eye-contact is discerned.
