having honored and respected me. Which five? Here, Udāyi, my disciples attribute to me superior virtue: 'Recluse Gotama is virtuous, endowed with the supreme aggregate of virtue.' And, Udāyi, my disciples And they esteem him for his higher virtue, saying: 'The recluse Gotama is virtuous, endowed with the highest aggregate of virtue.' This, indeed, Udāyi, is the first quality whereby my disciples honor me, respect me, revere me, venerate me, and having honored and respected me, they dwell dependent on me. 244. Furthermore, Udāyi, my disciples esteem me for my superior knowledge and vision, saying: 'The recluse Gotama speaks knowing – "I know," and speaks seeing – "I see"; The recluse Gotama teaches the Dhamma having directly known, not without directly knowing; The recluse Gotama teaches the Dhamma with a basis, not without a basis; The recluse Gotama teaches the Dhamma with a marvel, not without a marvel.' What do you think, Udāyi? Would my disciples, knowing thus, seeing thus, interrupt my discourse from time to time? No, Venerable Sir. Indeed, Udāyi, I do not expect instruction from my disciples; rather, my disciples expect instruction from me. And because, Udāyi, my disciples esteem me for my higher wisdom, saying: 'The recluse Gotama is wise... The recluse Gotama is endowed with the highest aggregate of wisdom; Surely he will not see a future argument, or an arisen dispute by others that he will not suppress with the Dhamma – such a thing is impossible. This, Udāyi, is the third quality whereby my disciples honor me, respect me, esteem me, venerate me, and having honored and respected me, they live in reliance on me. 246. Furthermore, Udāyi, my disciples, overwhelmed by suffering, afflicted by suffering, come to me and ask about the noble truth of suffering. When asked about the noble truth of suffering, I explain it to them, and I gladden their minds with the explanation of the question. They ask me about the noble truth of the origin of suffering… the noble truth of the cessation of suffering… the noble truth of the path leading to the cessation of suffering.
