That, Anuruddha, is for their long-term welfare and happiness. The Blessed One said this. Venerable Anuruddha, delighted, rejoiced in the Blessed One's words. The Naḷakapāna Sutta, the eighth, is finished. 9. The Goliyāni Sutta 173. Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Rājagaha, in the Bamboo Grove, the Squirrels' Feeding Ground. in the feeding ground. Now at that time a monk named Goliyāni, a forest dweller, one of strict practices, was brought into the midst of the Saṅgha for some reason. Then Venerable Sāriputta, referring to the monk Goliyāni, addressed the monks: “Friends, a forest-dwelling monk, when he comes into the Saṅgha and dwells in the Saṅgha, should be respectful and deferential towards his fellow monks. If, friends, a forest-dwelling monk, when he comes into the Saṅgha and dwells in the Saṅgha, is disrespectful and not deferential towards his fellow monks, then there are those who will criticize him. ‘What good is this Venerable’s solitary dwelling in the forest, when this Venerable is disrespectful and not deferential towards his fellow monks?’ — there are those who will criticize him. Therefore, a forest-dwelling monk, when he comes into the Saṅgha and dwells in the Saṅgha, should be respectful and deferential towards his fellow monks. “Friends, a forest-dwelling monk, when he comes into the Saṅgha and dwells in the Saṅgha, should be skilled in seating— ‘I will not crowd the elder monks, nor will I deny a seat to the junior monks.’ If, friends, a forest-dwelling monk, when he comes into the Saṅgha and dwells in the Saṅgha, is not skilled in seating, then there are those who will criticize him. ‘What good is this Venerable’s solitary dwelling in the forest, when this Venerable is not skilled in seating?’ — there are those who will criticize him. Therefore, a forest-dwelling monk, when he comes into the Saṅgha and dwells in the Saṅgha, should be skilled in seating. “Friends, a forest-dwelling monk, when he comes into the Saṅgha and dwells in the Saṅgha, should also know the rules of proper conduct. If, friends, a forest-dwelling monk, when he comes into the Saṅgha and dwells in the Saṅgha, does not even know the rules of proper conduct, then there are those who will criticize him.” ‘What is the use of this venerable forest-dweller living alone in the forest with freedom, when this venerable one does not even know the rules of proper conduct?’ — There are those who speak thus of him. Therefore, a forest-dwelling bhikkhu, when he has come to the Sangha, and is living in the Sangha, should know the rules of proper conduct. [This third recitation on proper conduct is not found in the Sinhala, Siamese, Cambodian, or Pāli manuscripts.] "Friend, a forest-dwelling bhikkhu, when he has come to the Sangha, and is living in the Sangha, should not enter the village too late, nor return too early [not in the daytime (Syā., Kaṃ., Pī., Ka.)]. If, friend, a forest-dwelling bhikkhu, when he has come to the Sangha, and is living in the Sangha, enters the village too late, or returns too early, there are those who speak thus of him. ‘What is the use of this venerable forest-dweller living alone in the forest with freedom, when this venerable one enters the village too late and returns too early?’ — There are those who speak thus of him. Therefore, a forest-dwelling bhikkhu, when he has come to the Sangha, and is living in the Sangha, should not enter the village too late, nor return too early. "Friend, a forest-dwelling bhikkhu, when he has come to the Sangha, and is living in the Sangha, should not engage in visiting families before or after the meal. If, friend, a forest-dwelling bhikkhu, when he has come to the Sangha, and is living in the Sangha, engages in visiting families before or after the meal, there are those who speak thus of him. ‘Surely, this venerable forest-dweller, living alone in the forest with freedom, has made a habit of untimely conduct, and it affects him even when he is with the Sangha.’ — There are those who speak thus of him. Therefore, a forest-dwelling bhikkhu, when he has come to the Sangha, and is living in the Sangha, should not engage in visiting families before or after the meal. "Friend, a forest-dwelling bhikkhu, when he has come to the Sangha, and is living in the Sangha, should be unarrogant and not fickle. If, friend, a forest-dwelling bhikkhu, when he has come to the Sangha, and is living in the Sangha, is arrogant and fickle, there are those who speak thus of him. ‘Surely, this venerable forest-dweller When he lives alone in the wilderness, roaming freely, restlessness and flightiness become abundant. These also manifest in him when he is in the Sangha. Concerning him, there are those who speak. Therefore, a forest-dwelling bhikkhu, when in the Sangha, living in the Sangha, should be without restlessness, should be without flightiness. Friends, a forest-dwelling bhikkhu, when in the Sangha, living in the Sangha, should be not talkative, with unscattered speech. If, friends, a forest-dwelling bhikkhu, when in the Sangha, living in the Sangha, is talkative, with scattered speech, concerning him, there are those who speak. 'What is the point of this venerable forest-dweller's free-roaming in the wilderness, this venerable one who is talkative, with scattered speech?' Concerning him, there are those who speak. Therefore, a forest-dwelling bhikkhu, when in the Sangha, living in the Sangha, should be not talkative, with unscattered speech. Friends, a forest-dwelling bhikkhu, when in the Sangha, living in the Sangha, should be amenable to admonition, a good friend. If, friends, a forest-dwelling bhikkhu, when in the Sangha, living in the Sangha, is difficult to admonish, a bad friend, concerning him, there are those who speak. 'What is the point of this venerable forest-dweller's free-roaming in the wilderness, this venerable one who is difficult to admonish, a bad friend?' Concerning him, there are those who speak. Therefore, a forest-dwelling bhikkhu, when in the Sangha, living in the Sangha, should be amenable to admonition, a good friend. Friends, a forest-dwelling bhikkhu should have guarded doors of the senses. If, friends, a forest-dwelling bhikkhu has unguarded doors of the senses, concerning him, there are those who speak. 'What is the point of this venerable forest-dweller's free-roaming in the wilderness, this venerable one who has unguarded doors of the senses?' Concerning him, there are those who speak. Therefore, a forest-dwelling bhikkhu should have guarded doors of the senses. Friends, a forest-dwelling bhikkhu should be moderate in eating. If, friends, a forest-dwelling bhikkhu is immoderate in eating, concerning him, there are those who speak. 'What is the point of this venerable forest-dweller's free-roaming in the wilderness, this venerable one What's the point of dwelling freely in the wilderness for this venerable one who is immoderate in food? There are those who speak about him. Therefore, a forest-dwelling monk should be moderate in food. Friends, a forest-dwelling monk should be devoted to wakefulness. If, friends, a forest-dwelling monk is not devoted to wakefulness, there are those who speak about him: 'What's the point of this venerable forest-dweller dwelling alone in the wilderness if he is not devoted to wakefulness?' There are those who speak about him. Therefore, a forest-dwelling monk should be devoted to wakefulness. Friends, a forest-dwelling monk should be energetic. If, friends, a forest-dwelling monk is lazy, there are those who speak about him: 'What's the point of this venerable forest-dweller dwelling alone in the wilderness if he is lazy?' There are those who speak about him. Therefore, a forest-dwelling monk should be energetic. Friends, a forest-dwelling monk should have mindfulness established. If, friends, a forest-dwelling monk is forgetful, there are those who speak about him: 'What's the point of this venerable forest-dweller dwelling alone in the wilderness if he is forgetful?' There are those who speak about him. Therefore, a forest-dwelling monk should have mindfulness established. Friends, a forest-dwelling monk should be concentrated. If, friends, a forest-dwelling monk is unconcentrated, there are those who speak about him: 'What's the point of this venerable forest-dweller dwelling alone in the wilderness if he is unconcentrated?' There are those who speak about him. Therefore, a forest-dwelling monk should be concentrated. Friends, a forest-dwelling monk should be wise. If, friends, a forest-dwelling monk is unwise, there are those who speak about him: 'What's the point of this venerable forest-dweller dwelling alone in the wilderness if he is unwise?' There are those who speak about him. Therefore, a forest-dwelling monk should be wise. A monk should be wise. "Friends, a forest-dwelling monk should apply himself to the Abhidhamma and Abhivinaya. Friends, there will be those who question a forest-dwelling monk on the Abhidhamma and Abhivinaya. If, friends, a forest-dwelling monk, when questioned on the Abhidhamma and Abhivinaya, cannot answer, they will say of him: ‘What good is this venerable forest-dweller's solitary dwelling in the forest, if this venerable one, when questioned on the Abhidhamma and Abhivinaya, cannot answer?’ — they will say of him. Therefore, a forest-dwelling monk should apply himself to the Abhidhamma and Abhivinaya. "Friends, a forest-dwelling monk should apply himself to those peaceful liberations that transcend forms, the formless attainments. Friends, there will be those who question a forest-dwelling monk on those peaceful liberations that transcend forms, the formless attainments. If, friends, a forest-dwelling monk, when questioned on those peaceful liberations that transcend forms, the formless attainments, cannot answer, they will say of him: ‘What good is this venerable forest-dweller's solitary dwelling in the forest,
