He knows 'This is the path leading to the cessation of the taints' as it really is. For him, thus knowing, thus seeing, his mind is liberated from the taint of sensual desire. His mind is liberated from the taint of becoming. His mind is liberated from the taint of ignorance. When liberated, the knowledge 'It is liberated' arises. He knows: 'Birth is destroyed, the holy life has been lived, what was to be done has been done, there is no more for this state of being.' This, householders, is called a person who does not torment himself, nor is devoted to the practice of tormenting himself; who does not torment others, nor is devoted to the practice of tormenting others. He, not tormenting himself, not tormenting others, in this very life, is cooled, extinguished, become cool, experiencing happiness, he dwells with a divine self.'' When this was said, the Saleyyaka brahmin householders said to the Blessed One: ‘‘Excellent, good Gotama! Excellent, good Gotama! Just as, good Gotama, one might set upright what was overturned, or reveal what was hidden, or point out the way to one who was lost, or hold up a lamp in the darkness so that those with eyes might see forms; even so has the good Gotama in many ways made the Dhamma clear. We go for refuge to the good Gotama, to the Dhamma, and to the Sangha of bhikkhus. May the good Gotama accept us as lay followers from this day forth, for as long as life lasts, who have gone for refuge.’’ The Apaṇṇaka Sutta, the tenth, is finished. The Chapter on Householders, the first, is finished. Its summary – Kandara, Nāgarasekhā, and Potaliya again; Jīvaka, Bhacca; Upāli, Kukkura, Abhaya; Bahuvedanīya, Apaṇṇaka, the tenth.
