‘‘These four nutriments have craving as their source, craving as their origin, craving as their birth, craving as their provenance.’’ ‘‘And this craving, monks, what is its source, what is its origin, what is its birth, what is its provenance?’’ ‘‘Craving has feeling as its source, feeling as its origin, feeling as its birth, feeling as its provenance.’’ ‘‘And this feeling, monks, what is its source, what is its origin, what is its birth, what is its provenance?’’ ‘‘Feeling has contact as its source, contact as its origin, contact as its birth, contact as its provenance.’’ ‘‘And this contact, monks, what is its source, what is its origin, What is its birth, what is its source? Contact has the six sense bases as its cause, its origin, its birth, its source. And these six sense bases, monastics, what is their cause, their origin, their birth, their source? The six sense bases have name-and-form as their cause, their origin, their birth, their source. And this name-and-form, monastics, what is its cause, its origin, its birth, its source? Name-and-form has consciousness as its cause, its origin, its birth, its source. And this consciousness, monastics, what is its cause, its origin, its birth, its source? Consciousness has volitional formations as its cause, its origin, its birth, its source. And these volitional formations, monastics, what is their cause, their origin, their birth, their source? Volitional formations have ignorance as their cause, their origin, their birth, their source. Thus, monastics, with ignorance as condition, volitional formations; with volitional formations as condition, consciousness; with consciousness as condition, name-and-form; with name-and-form as condition, the six sense bases; with the six sense bases as condition, contact; with contact as condition, feeling; with feeling as condition, craving; with craving as condition, clinging; with clinging as condition, becoming; with becoming as condition, birth; with birth as condition, old age and death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, displeasure, and despair arise. Thus is the origin of this entire mass of suffering. It has been said: ‘With birth as condition, old age and death.’ Now, monastics, is it truly with birth as condition that old age and death arise, or not? Or how do you understand this? With birth as condition, venerable sir, old age and death arise. This is how we understand it: with birth as condition, old age and death. It has been said: ‘With becoming as condition, birth.’ Now, monastics, is it truly with becoming as condition that birth arises, or not? Or how do you understand this? With becoming as condition, venerable sir, birth arises. This is how we understand it: with becoming as condition, birth. With clinging as condition... "Becoming," thus it has been said. Monks, is it indeed that clinging conditions becoming, or not? How is it here? "Venerable sir, clinging conditions becoming; thus it is for us here – clinging conditions becoming." "Craving conditions clinging," thus it has been said. Monks, is it indeed that craving conditions clinging, or not? How is it here? "Venerable sir, craving conditions clinging; thus it is for us here – craving conditions clinging." "Feeling conditions craving," thus it has been said. Monks, is it indeed that feeling conditions craving, or not? How is it here? "Venerable sir, feeling conditions craving; thus it is for us here – feeling conditions craving." "Contact conditions feeling," thus it has been said. Monks, is it indeed that contact conditions feeling, or not? How is it here? "Venerable sir, contact conditions feeling; thus it is for us here – contact conditions feeling." "Six sense bases condition contact," thus it has been said. Monks, is it indeed that six sense bases condition contact, or not? How is it here? "Venerable sir, six sense bases condition contact; thus it is for us here – six sense bases condition contact." "Name-and-form conditions six sense bases," thus it has been said. Monks, is it indeed that name-and-form conditions six sense bases, or not? How is it here? "Venerable sir, name-and-form conditions six sense bases; thus it is for us here – name-and-form conditions six sense bases." "Consciousness conditions name-and-form," thus it has been said. Monks, is it indeed that consciousness conditions name-and-form, or not? How is it here? "Venerable sir, consciousness conditions name-and-form; thus it is for us here – consciousness conditions name-and-form." "Formations condition consciousness," thus it has been said. Monks, is it indeed that formations condition consciousness, or not? How is it here? "For... Conditioned by formations, venerable sir, is consciousness; Thus it is for us here – conditioned by formations is consciousness. It has been said, "Conditioned by ignorance are formations"; Are formations conditioned by ignorance, monks, or not, or how is it here? Conditioned by ignorance, venerable sir, are formations; Thus it is for us here – conditioned by ignorance are formations. 404. Good, monks. Thus, monks, you too say this, and I too say this – When this exists, that comes to be; with the arising of this, that arises, namely – Conditioned by ignorance are formations, conditioned by formations is consciousness, conditioned by consciousness is name-and-form, conditioned by name-and-form are the six sense bases, conditioned by the six sense bases is contact, conditioned by contact is feeling, conditioned by feeling is craving, conditioned by craving is clinging, conditioned by clinging is becoming, conditioned by becoming is birth, conditioned by birth, old age and death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, displeasure, and despair come to be. Thus is the origin of this whole mass of suffering. With the complete fading away and cessation of ignorance, there is cessation of formations, with the cessation of formations, cessation of consciousness, with the cessation of consciousness, cessation of name-and-form, with the cessation of name-and-form, cessation of the six sense bases, with the cessation of the six sense bases, cessation of contact, with the cessation of contact, cessation of feeling, with the cessation of feeling, cessation of craving, with the cessation of craving, cessation of clinging, with the cessation of clinging, cessation of becoming, with the cessation of becoming, cessation of birth, with the cessation of birth, old age and death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, displeasure, and despair cease. Thus is the cessation of this whole mass of suffering. 405. It has been said, "With the cessation of birth, there is cessation of old age and death"; Is it, monks, that with the cessation of birth, there is cessation of old age and death, or not, or how is it here? With the cessation of birth, venerable sir, there is cessation of old age and death; Thus it is for us here – with the cessation of birth, there is cessation of old age and death. It has been said, "With the cessation of becoming, there is cessation of birth"; Is it, monks, that with the cessation of becoming, there is cessation of birth or not, or how is it here?" "With the cessation of becoming, venerable sir, there is the cessation of birth; thus it is here for us - with the cessation of becoming, there is the cessation of birth." "It has been said that with the cessation of clinging, there is the cessation of becoming; is it so, monks, that with the cessation of clinging, there is the cessation of becoming, or not, or how is it here?" "With the cessation of clinging, venerable sir, there is the cessation of becoming; thus it is here for us - with the cessation of clinging, there is the cessation of becoming." "It has been said that with the cessation of craving, there is the cessation of clinging; is it so, monks, that with the cessation of craving, there is the cessation of clinging, or not, or how is it here?" "With the cessation of craving, venerable sir, there is the cessation of clinging; thus it is here for us - with the cessation of craving, there is the cessation of clinging." "It has been said that with the cessation of feeling, there is the cessation of craving; is it so, monks, that with the cessation of feeling, there is the cessation of craving, or not, or how is it here?" "With the cessation of feeling, venerable sir, there is the cessation of craving; thus it is here for us - with the cessation of feeling, there is the cessation of craving." "It has been said that with the cessation of contact, there is the cessation of feeling; is it so, monks, that with the cessation of contact, there is the cessation of feeling, or not, or how is it here?" "With the cessation of contact, venerable sir, there is the cessation of feeling; thus it is here for us - with the cessation of contact, there is the cessation of feeling." "It has been said that with the cessation of the six sense bases, there is the cessation of contact; is it so, monks, that with the cessation of the six sense bases, there is the cessation of contact, or not, or how is it here?" "With the cessation of the six sense bases, venerable sir, there is the cessation of contact; thus it is here for us - with the cessation of the six sense bases, there is the cessation of contact." "It has been said that with the cessation of name-and-form, there is the cessation of the six sense bases; is it so, monks, that with the cessation of name-and-form, there is the cessation of the six sense bases, or not, or how is it here?" "With the cessation of name-and-form, venerable sir, there is the cessation of the six sense bases; thus it is here for us - with the cessation of name-and-form, there is the cessation of the six sense bases." "It has been said that with the cessation of consciousness, there is the cessation of name-and-form Is it, monks, that with the cessation of consciousness, there is cessation of name-and-form? Or not? Or how is it here?
