he should not conceive in Nibbāna, he should not conceive from Nibbāna, he should not conceive 'Nibbāna is mine,' he should not delight in Nibbāna. For what reason? 'It is to be fully understood by him,' I say. The second section on the stage of insight, in terms of the trainee, is finished. 8. "And also, bhikkhus, that bhikkhu who is an Arahant, whose taints are destroyed, who has lived the holy life, who has done what had to be done, who has laid down the burden, who has attained his own goal, whose fetters of existence are utterly destroyed, who is liberated through perfect knowledge— he also fully understands earth as earth. Having fully understood earth as earth, he does not conceive earth, he does not conceive in earth, he does not conceive from earth, he does not conceive 'earth is mine,' he does not delight in earth. For what reason? 'It is fully understood by him,' I say. "Water... Fire... Wind... Beings... Devas... Pajāpati... Brahmā... The Abhassara gods... The Subhakiṇha gods... The Vehapphala gods... The Overlord... The dimension of infinite space... The dimension of infinite consciousness... The dimension of nothingness... The dimension of neither perception nor non-perception... What is seen... What is heard... What is sensed... What is cognized... Unity... Diversity... All... Nibbāna— he fully understands Nibbāna as Nibbāna. Having fully understood Nibbāna as Nibbāna, he does not conceive Nibbāna, he does not conceive in Nibbāna, he does not conceive from Nibbāna, he does not conceive 'Nibbāna is mine,' he does not delight in Nibbāna. For what reason? 'It is fully understood by him,' I say. The third section on the stage of insight, in terms of one whose taints are destroyed, is finished. 9. "And also, bhikkhus, that bhikkhu who is an Arahant, whose taints are destroyed, who has lived the holy life, who has done what had to be done, who has laid down the burden, who has attained his own goal, whose fetters of existence are utterly destroyed— Even he who is liberated by right understanding, he too discerns earth as earth; having discerned earth as earth, he does not conceive of earth, he does not conceive in earth, he does not conceive from earth, he does not conceive 'earth is mine', he does not delight in earth. For what reason? Due to the destruction of lust, being without lust. Water, Fire, Wind, Beings, Gods, Prajāpati, Brahmā, the gods of Streaming Radiance, the gods of Refulgent Glory, the gods of Great Fruit, the Overlord, the dimension of infinite space, the dimension of infinite consciousness, the dimension of nothingness, the dimension of neither perception nor non-perception, what is seen, what is heard, what is sensed, what is cognized, unity, diversity, the all, Nibbāna as Nibbāna he discerns; having discerned Nibbāna as Nibbāna, he does not conceive of Nibbāna, he does not conceive in Nibbāna, he does not conceive from Nibbāna, he does not conceive 'Nibbāna is mine', he does not delight in Nibbāna. For what reason? Due to the destruction of lust, being without lust. By way of the one whose taints are destroyed, the fourth section of the exposition is concluded. 10. Even that monk, bhikkhus, who is an arahant, with taints destroyed, who has lived the holy life, done what had to be done, laid down the burden, attained his own true goal, utterly ended the fetters of existence, liberated by right understanding, he too discerns earth as earth; having discerned earth as earth, he does not conceive of earth, he does not conceive in earth, he does not conceive from earth, he does not conceive 'earth is mine', he does not delight in earth. For what reason? Due to the destruction of hatred, being without hatred. Water, Fire, Wind, Beings, Gods, Prajāpati, Brahmā, the gods of Streaming Radiance, the gods of Refulgent Glory, the gods of Great Fruit, the Overlord, the dimension of infinite space, the dimension of infinite consciousness, the dimension of nothingness, the dimension of neither perception nor non-perception, what is seen, what is heard, what is sensed, what is cognized, unity, diversity, the all, Nibbāna as Nibbāna he discerns; having discerned Nibbāna as Nibbāna, he does not conceive of Nibbāna, he does not conceive in Nibbāna, he does not conceive from Nibbāna, he does not conceive 'Nibbāna is mine', he does not delight in Nibbāna. For what reason? Due to the destruction of hatred, being without hatred. Thus. The section on the fifth way of understanding, concerning the one whose taints are destroyed, is concluded. 11. "And also, monks, that bhikkhu, an Arahant, one whose taints are destroyed, who has lived the holy life, done what had to be done, laid down the burden, attained his own true goal, utterly destroyed the fetters of existence, and is liberated through perfect knowledge, he too knows earth as earth; having known earth as earth, he does not conceive of earth, he does not conceive in earth, he does not conceive from earth, he does not conceive 'earth is mine', he does not delight in earth. Why is that? Because of the destruction of delusion, because delusion has vanished. The section on the sixth way of understanding, concerning the one whose taints are destroyed, is concluded. 12. "The Tathāgata too, monks, the Arahant, the Perfectly Self-Enlightened One, knows earth as earth; having known earth as earth, he does not conceive of earth, he does not conceive in earth, he does not conceive from earth, he does not conceive 'earth is mine', he does not delight in earth. Why is that? I say, 'It is fully understood by the Tathāgata.' "Water... (and so on)... fire... wind... beings... devas... Prajāpati... Brahmā... the Abhassara gods... the Subhakiṇha gods... the Vehapphala gods... the Overlord... the dimension of infinite space... the dimension of infinite consciousness... the dimension of nothingness... the dimension of neither perception nor non-perception... what is seen... what is heard... what is sensed... what is cognized... unity... diversity... all... Nibbāna he knows as Nibbāna; having known Nibbāna as Nibbāna, he does not conceive of Nibbāna, he does not conceive in Nibbāna, he does not conceive from Nibbāna, he does not conceive 'Nibbāna is mine', he does not delight in Nibbāna. he does not conceive of Nibbāna as 'I am', he does not delight in Nibbāna. For what reason? 'It has been fully understood by the Tathāgata,' I say. The seventh section on the mode of the Tathāgata is finished. 13. "The Tathāgata, monks, the Arahant, the Fully Enlightened One, knows earth as earth; having known earth as earth, he does not conceive of earth, he does not conceive in earth, he does not conceive from earth, he does not conceive of earth as 'I am', he does not delight in earth. For what reason? 'Delight is the root of suffering' - thus having known, 'from existence comes birth, for what has come to be, old age and death.' Therefore, monks, 'the Tathāgata, through the complete destruction, dispassion, cessation, relinquishment, and giving up of all cravings, has fully awakened to the unexcelled perfect enlightenment,' I say. "Water... fire... wind... beings... devas... Pajāpati... Brahmā... the Ābhassarā gods... the Subhakiṇhā gods... the Vehapphalā gods... the Overlord... the sphere of infinite space... the sphere of infinite consciousness... the sphere of nothingness... the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception... what is seen... what is heard... what is sensed... what is cognized... unity... diversity... the all... Nibbāna, he knows Nibbāna as Nibbāna; having known Nibbāna as Nibbāna, he does not conceive of Nibbāna, he does not conceive in Nibbāna, he does not conceive from Nibbāna, he does not conceive of Nibbāna as 'I am', he does not delight in Nibbāna. The eighth section on the mode of the Tathāgata is finished. This is what the Blessed One said. Those monks did not delight in the Blessed One's words. The Root-Discourse is finished, the first. 2. The Discourse on All Taints 14. Thus have I heard - On one occasion the Blessed One was staying at Sāvatthī, in Jetavana. In Anāthapiṇḍika's monastery, in Jeta's Grove. There, indeed, the Blessed One addressed the bhikkhus, saying: "Bhikkhus!" "Venerable Sir," those bhikkhus replied to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said this: "I will teach you, bhikkhus, the discourse on the restraint of all taints. Listen to it, attend carefully, I will speak." "Yes, Venerable Sir," those bhikkhus replied to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said this: 15. "Bhikkhus, I declare the destruction of taints for one who knows, for one who sees, not for one who does not know, not for one who does not see. And what, bhikkhus, does one know, what does one see, for which I declare the destruction of taints? Wise attention and unwise attention. Bhikkhus, when one attends unwisely, undeclared taints arise,
