Here, for one, there are agreeable, pleasant, desirable forms, sounds, smells, tastes, tactile objects, mental objects; or those who are dear to him... Wishing for welfare, wishing for benefit, wishing for comfort, wishing for security from bondage, whether mother or father, or brother or sister, or friends or ministers, or blood relatives, that which is not associating with them, not meeting with them, not coming together with them, not mixing with them, this is called, monks, separation from the dear is suffering. 398. And what, monks, is not getting what one wants, that too is suffering? For beings subject to birth, monks, such a wish arises: ‘Oh, if only we were not subject to birth, and if only birth would not come to us!’ But this is not to be attained by wishing; this too, not getting what one wants, is suffering. For beings subject to aging, monks, such a wish arises: ‘Oh, if only we were not subject to aging, and if only aging would not come to us!’ But this is not to be attained by wishing; this too, not getting what one wants, is suffering. For beings subject to sickness, monks, such a wish arises: ‘Oh, if only we were not subject to sickness, and if only sickness would not come to us!’ But this is not to be attained by wishing; this too, not getting what one wants, is suffering. For beings subject to death, monks, such a wish arises: ‘Oh, if only we were not subject to death, and if only death would not come to us!’ But this is not to be attained by wishing; this too, not getting what one wants, is suffering. For beings subject to sorrow, lamentation, pain, displeasure, and despair, monks, such a wish arises: ‘Oh, if only we were not subject to sorrow, lamentation, pain, displeasure, and despair, and if only sorrow, lamentation, pain, displeasure, and despair would not come to us!’ But this is not to be attained by wishing; this too, not getting what one wants, is suffering. 399. And what, monks, in brief, are the five aggregates of clinging that are suffering? Namely: the aggregate of clinging to form, the aggregate of clinging to feeling, the aggregate of clinging to perception, the aggregate of clinging to mental formations... ...the aggregate of clinging to consciousness. These, monks, are called, in brief, the five aggregates of clinging, which are suffering. This, monks, is called the Noble Truth of Suffering. Explanation of the Truth of Origin 400. And what, monks, is the Noble Truth of the Origin of Suffering? It is this craving which leads to re-becoming, accompanied by delight and lust, finding delight here and there; namely, craving for sensual pleasures, craving for existence, craving for non-existence. And this craving, monks, where does it arise when arising? Where does it settle when settling? That which in the world is dear and delightful, there this craving arises when arising, there it settles when settling. And what in the world is dear and delightful? The eye in the world is dear and delightful; there this craving arises when arising, there it settles when settling. The ear in the world... ...the nose in the world... ...the tongue in the world... ...the body in the world... ...the mind in the world is dear and delightful; there this craving arises when arising, there it settles when settling. Forms in the world... ...sounds in the world... ...odors in the world... ...tastes in the world... ...tactile objects in the world... ...mental phenomena in the world are dear and delightful; there this craving arises when arising, there it settles when settling. Eye-consciousness in the world... ...ear-consciousness in the world... ...nose-consciousness in the world... ...tongue-consciousness in the world... ...body-consciousness in the world... ...mind-consciousness in the world is dear and delightful; there this craving arises when arising, there it settles when settling. Eye-contact in the world... ...ear-contact in the world... ...nose-contact in the world... ...tongue-contact in the world... ...body-contact in the world... ...mind-contact in the world is dear and delightful; there this craving arises when arising, there it settles when settling. Feeling born of eye-contact in the world... ...feeling born of ear-contact in the world... ...feeling born of nose-contact in the world... ...feeling born of tongue-contact in the world... ...feeling born of body-contact... All feelings in the world… feelings born of mind-contact in the world are dear forms, agreeable forms. Here this craving, arising, arises; here settling, it settles. Perception of forms in the world… perception of sounds in the world… perception of odors in the world… perception of tastes in the world… perception of tangibles in the world… perception of mental phenomena in the world are dear forms, agreeable forms. Here this craving, arising, arises; here settling, it settles. Volition regarding forms in the world… volition regarding sounds in the world… volition regarding odors in the world… volition regarding tastes in the world… volition regarding tangibles in the world… volition regarding mental phenomena in the world are dear forms, agreeable forms. Here this craving, arising, arises; here settling, it settles. Craving for forms in the world… craving for sounds in the world… craving for odors in the world… craving for tastes in the world… craving for tangibles in the world… craving for mental phenomena in the world are dear forms, agreeable forms. Here this craving, arising, arises; here settling, it settles. Initial thought regarding forms in the world… initial thought regarding sounds in the world… initial thought regarding odors in the world… initial thought regarding tastes in the world… initial thought regarding tangibles in the world… initial thought regarding mental phenomena in the world are dear forms, agreeable forms. Here this craving, arising, arises; here settling, it settles. Sustained thought regarding forms in the world… sustained thought regarding sounds in the world… sustained thought regarding odors in the world… sustained thought regarding tastes in the world… sustained thought regarding tangibles in the world… sustained thought regarding mental phenomena in the world are dear forms, agreeable forms. Here this craving, arising, arises; here settling, it settles. This, monks, is called the Noble Truth of the Origin of Suffering. Exposition of the Truth of Cessation And what, monks, is the Noble Truth of the Cessation of Suffering? It is the complete fading away and cessation, the abandonment, relinquishment, liberation, non-attachment of that very craving. And that craving, monks, where, being abandoned, is it abandoned? where, ceasing, does it cease? That which in the world is a dear form, an agreeable form, here this craving, being abandoned, is abandoned; here, ceasing, it ceases. And what in the world is a dear form, an agreeable form? The eye… What in the world is dear and delightful, there this craving, being abandoned, is abandoned; there, being ceased, it ceases. The ear in the world... the nose in the world... the tongue in the world... the body in the world... the mind in the world are dear and delightful, there this craving, being abandoned, is abandoned; there, being ceased, it ceases. Forms in the world... sounds in the world... odors in the world... tastes in the world... tangibles in the world... mental phenomena in the world are dear and delightful, there this craving, being abandoned, is abandoned; there, being ceased, it ceases.
