When this was said, the Mallas of Kosinārā said to those assemblies and groups: "The Blessed One passed away in our village territory. We will not give a share of the Blessed One's relics." 237. When this was said, Doṇa the brahmin said to those assemblies and groups: "May the sirs hear my one word. Our Buddha was one who spoke of patience. It is not good that there should be a quarrel over the relics of the supreme person. May all sirs, united and harmonious, joyfully make eight shares. May stupas be spread in the directions, many people delighted in the One with Vision." 238. "Then, brahmin, you yourself divide the Blessed One's relics into eight equal and well-divided shares." "So be it, sirs," Doṇa the brahmin replied to those assemblies and groups, and having divided the Blessed One's relics into eight equal and well-divided shares, he said to those assemblies and groups: "Sirs, give me this urn. I too will make a stupa and a festival for the urn." They gave the urn to Doṇa the brahmin. The Moriyas of Pippalivana heard: "The Blessed One has passed away in Kusinārā." Then The Moriyas of Pippalivana sent a messenger to the Mallas of Kusinara, saying: "The Blessed One was a warrior, we too are warriors. We too are worthy of a share of the Blessed One's relics. We too will make a stupa and a festival for the Blessed One's relics." [They replied:] "There is no share of the Blessed One's relics [left], the Blessed One's relics have been distributed. Take the embers from here." They then took the embers from there. Worship of the Relic Stupas Then King Ajātasattu, son of Vedehī, the Magadhan, made a stupa and a festival for the Blessed One's relics in Rājagaha. The Licchavis of Vesālī made a stupa and a festival for the Blessed One's relics in Vesālī. The Sakyas of Kapilavatthu made a stupa and a festival for the Blessed One's relics in Kapilavatthu. The Bulis of Allakappa made a stupa and a festival for the Blessed One's relics in Allakappa. The Koliyas of Rāmagāma made a stupa and a festival for the Blessed One's relics in Rāmagāma. The Moriyas of Pippalivana made a stupa and a festival for the embers in Pippalivana. Thus, there were eight relic stupas, the ninth was the urn stupa, the tenth was the ember stupa. This is how it happened in the past. Eight measures of the Seer's relics, seven measures are honored in Jambudīpa. And one measure of the supreme among men, the Nāga king honors in Rāmagāma. One canine tooth is worshipped by the gods in Tāvatiṃsa, one is honored in Gandhāra city; another in the realm of the Kalinga king, and one the Nāga king honors. By his very splendor, this earth, the ground is adorned with excellent shrines; Thus, these relics of the Seer, are well-honored by the honored and revered. Worshipped by kings of gods, kings of nāgas, and kings of men. Here, Likewise honored by the foremost of human lords; Having obtained (Him), worship Him with clasped hands, For the Buddha is indeed rare for hundreds of eons. Forty teeth, and hairs of the head and body, all completely; The devas carried away each one, throughout successive world-systems.
