were to descend from my vehicle and salute Master Gotama, that assembly would despise me. If that assembly were to despise me, my reputation would decline. If my reputation were to decline, my wealth would also decline. For our wealth is gained through reputation. If I, good Gotama, while on a journey, were to raise my goad-stick, may Master Gotama consider that as my descending from my vehicle. If I, good Gotama, while on a journey, were to lower my parasol, may Master Gotama consider that as my salutation with my head." 322. Then the Blessed One, having instructed, urged, inspired, and gladdened the brahmin Sonadaṇḍa with a Dhamma talk, rose from his seat and departed. The Sonadaṇḍa Sutta, the fourth, is finished.
