or point out the way to one who was lost, or hold up a lamp in the darkness 'so that those with eyes might see forms'; even so, venerable sir, has the Dhamma been made clear by the Blessed One in many ways. I, venerable sir, go for refuge to the Blessed One, to the Dhamma, and to the Sangha of bhikkhus. May the Blessed One remember me as a lay follower, who has gone for refuge from this day forth, for as long as life lasts. An offense, venerable sir, overtook me, as a fool, as one deluded, as one unskilled, in that I... I, for the sake of power, Deprived of life My righteous father, The king of Dhamma. May the Blessed One, Venerable Sir, Accept this transgression of mine As a transgression, For future restraint. 251. ‘‘Indeed, great king, You committed a transgression Like a fool, Like one deluded, Like one unskillful, In that you deprived of life Your righteous father, The king of Dhamma. But since, great king, Having seen the transgression as a transgression, You make amends according to the Dhamma, We accept that from you. This is growth, great king, In the Noble Discipline: One who, having seen a transgression as a transgression, Makes amends according to the Dhamma, And undertakes future restraint.’’ 252. When this was said, King Ajātasattu of Magadha, Son of Vedehī, Said this to the Blessed One: ‘‘Now then, Venerable Sir, We depart. We have much to do, Many duties.’’ ‘‘Now, great king, You may do as you think fit.’’ Then King Ajātasattu of Magadha, Son of Vedehī, Having delighted in and rejoiced at The Blessed One’s words, Rose from his seat, Bowed to the Blessed One, Circumambulated him clockwise, And departed. 253. Then the Blessed One, After King Ajātasattu of Magadha, Son of Vedehī, Had not long departed, Addressed the bhikkhus: ‘‘This king, bhikkhus, is ruined. This king, bhikkhus, is destroyed. If this king, bhikkhus, Had not deprived of life His righteous father, The king of Dhamma, Then in this very seat The dustless, stainless Dhamma-eye Would have arisen for him.’’ This is what the Blessed One said. Delighted, those bhikkhus Rejoiced in the Blessed One’s words. The Sāmaññaphala Sutta, The second, is finished.
