The Verses of Sweat-Producing Questions 1. The Question of Non-Separation 479. Non-association with monks and nuns; Certain communion with them is not allowed; Through non-separation, there is no offense; This question of mine is pondered by the skilled. That which is not to be given away, not to be divided; Five were stated by the Great Seer; For one who gives away, for one who partakes, there is no offense; This question of mine is pondered by the skilled. I do not speak of ten persons, eleven are to be avoided; For one who bows to an elder, there is an offense; this question of mine is pondered by the skilled. Not one who is suspended, nor one who is on probation; Not one who has split the Sangha, nor one who has gone over to a faction; Standing on the ground of common residence; How could he be uncommon in training? This question of mine is pondered by the skilled. He approaches the Dhamma, inquiring, that which is skillful and conducive to welfare; He does not live, nor is he dead, nor is he extinguished; what do the Buddhas call that person? This question of mine is pondered by the skilled. I do not speak of above the armpits, avoiding below the navel; On account of the sexual act, how could there be a defeat? This question of mine is pondered by the skilled. A monk builds a hut by asking; With undesignated site, exceeding the measure; Without disturbance, without circumambulation, there is no offense; This question of mine is pondered by the skilled. He performs no bodily action whatsoever; Nor does he speak to others with words; He would incur a grave offense, a matter of expulsion; This question of mine is pondered by the skilled. Neither bodily nor verbal whatsoever; Even in mind, a virtuous one would not do evil; He is destroyed; how could he be well-destroyed? This question of mine is pondered by the skilled. Not speaking with any human being; Nor speaking words to others; He would incur a verbal offense, not a bodily one; This question of mine is pondered by the skilled. The training rules described by the Buddha, the excellent one; There would be four Sanghādisesas; He would incur all of them with a single effort; This question of mine It was pondered by the skilled. Both were ordained together; From the hands of both, robes were received; There might be different offenses; This problem was pondered by the skilled. Four people conspired; They stole a heavy item; Three are defeated, one is not defeated; This problem was pondered by the skilled. 2. Problems of Defeat and so on 480. A woman might be inside, And a monk might be outside; There is no opening in that house; Due to sexual intercourse; How could he be defeated? This problem was pondered by the skilled. Oil, honey, molasses, and also ghee; Having taken them himself, he might put them away; Before seven days have passed; If there is a reason, for one consuming, there is an offense; This problem was pondered by the skilled. By relinquishment, an offense; By pure (act), an offense of expiation; For one committing both together; This problem was pondered by the skilled. Monks might be assembled, twenty of them; They might perform an act, perceiving harmony; A monk might be standing twelve leagues away; And that act might be invalidated due to a faction; This problem was pondered by the skilled. By merely changing the word order, and by speaking; All are grave and require rectification; Sixty-four offenses might be committed at once; This problem was pondered by the skilled. Dressed in an inner robe; Covered with a double outer robe; All of these become subject to relinquishment; This problem was pondered by the skilled. Neither a motion nor a formal declaration; Nor did the Conqueror say "Come, monk"; Nor did he have recourse to the refuges; Yet his ordination is unshakeable; This problem was pondered by the skilled. He kills a woman, but not his mother; he kills a man, but not his father; The fool kills a non-noble one, and thereby incurs an immediate karma; This problem was pondered by the skilled. He kills a woman, and his mother; he kills a man, and his father; Having killed his mother and father, he does not thereby incur an immediate karma; This problem was pondered by the skilled. Without accusing, without reminding; One performs an act for one who is not present; And the act is done The act done might be well done; And the Sangha, the doer, would be blameless; This problem of mine is considered by the skilled. Having urged and reminded; The Sangha should perform the act in the presence; But the act done might be undone; And the Sangha, the doer, would be blameworthy; This problem of mine is considered by the skilled. For one cutting, there is an offense; for one cutting, there is no offense; For one covering, there is an offense; for one covering, there is no offense; This problem of mine is considered by the skilled. Speaking truth, one is heavy; speaking falsehood, one is light; Speaking falsehood, one is heavy; speaking truth, one is light; This problem of mine is considered by the skilled. 3. Problems concerning Pācittiya and others 481. Dyed with dye, made red; Even if it is suitable; For one using it, there is an offense; This problem of mine is considered by the skilled. When the sun has set, a bhikkhu eats meat; He is not insane, nor is his mind deranged; Nor is he afflicted by pain; And there is no offense for him; And that teaching was expounded by the Fortunate One; This problem of mine is considered by the skilled. Not with a mind of lust, nor with a mind of theft; Nor did he intend another's death; For one giving the ticket, there is a cutting off; For one receiving, there is a serious offense; This problem of mine is considered by the skilled. Nor is it considered a dangerous forest dwelling; Nor has the Sangha given permission; Nor has his kathina been spread there; Having laid aside his robe, he might go half a yojana; For him, as dawn breaks there, there is no offense; This problem of mine is considered by the skilled. Bodily, not verbal; All of various objects; He might incur them simultaneously, not one before the other; This problem of mine is considered by the skilled. Three women, he does not engage in sexual intercourse with them; Three men, three ignoble eunuchs; He does not engage in sexual intercourse with them in terms of their gender; There would be a cutting off due to the sexual act; This problem of mine is considered by the skilled. Pondered. He asks his mother for a robe, and it's not dedicated to the Saṅgha; What offense does he incur? And no offense regarding relatives; This problem was pondered by the skilled. An angry person is successful, an angry person is blameworthy; What is that Dhamma, by which an angry person is praised? This problem was pondered by the skilled. A pleased person is successful, a pleased person is blameworthy; What is that Dhamma, by which a pleased person is blameworthy? This problem was pondered by the skilled. A Saṅghādisesa, a serious offense; A Pācittiya, a Pāṭidesanīya; He would incur a Dukkaṭa, all at once; This problem was pondered by the skilled. Both are full twenty years old; Both have one preceptor; One teacher, one formal act; One is fully ordained, one is not fully ordained; This problem was pondered by the skilled. Not allowable, nor dyed with dye; Clothed in it, he may go wherever he wishes; And he incurs no offense; And that Dhamma was taught by the Sugata; This problem was pondered by the skilled. He does not give, he does not receive, no receiving by him exists; He incurs a serious offense, not a light one, and that is due to consumption; This problem was pondered by the skilled. He does not give, he does not receive, no receiving by him exists; He incurs a light offense, not a serious one, and that is due to consumption; This problem was pondered by the skilled. He incurs a serious, remaining offense; He conceals it due to disrespect; Not a bhikkhunī, nor would she incur a fault; This problem was pondered by the skilled. The Verses for Sweating are finished. Its summary – No communion, not released, and ten not suspended; He approaches the Dhamma, a devourer, then two requests. Not bodily and serious, not bodily, not verbal; Not speaking, and training, and both four persons. A woman, and oil, and relinquished, and a bhikkhu, and transgression of steps; And clothed, and not a formal act, not mother, father... Kill. Without urging, having urged, Cutting off, and indeed the truth. Determined, having set, Not attached, nor of the forest. Bodily and verbal, Tissa's wife, and also mother.
