Second Collection of Verses 1. Offenses beginning with bodily (action) 474. How many offenses are bodily, how many are verbal? How many offenses for one who conceals, how many due to association? Six offenses are bodily, six are verbal; For one who conceals, three offenses, five due to association. How many offenses at dawn, how many are 'up to three times'? How many here are of eight bases, by how many is all included? At dawn, three offenses, two are 'up to three times'; One here is of eight bases, by one is all included. How many roots of the Vinaya, which were laid down by the Buddha? How many are called 'heavy in Vinaya', how many are 'concealing serious (offenses)'? Two roots of the Vinaya, which were laid down by the Buddha; Two are called 'heavy in Vinaya', two are 'concealing serious (offenses)'. How many offenses in another village, how many due to crossing a river? In how many meats is there a grave offense, in how many meats is there a minor offense? How many are called 'heavy in Vinaya', and bodily and verbal (actions)? How many grain-juices (are allowed) at the wrong time, how many designations by a motion with four declarations? Two are called 'heavy in Vinaya', and bodily and verbal (actions); One grain-juice (is allowed) at the wrong time, one designation by a motion with four declarations. How many bodily Pārājikas, how many grounds for communal living? For how many is there a break of night, how many 'two-fingers' are laid down? Two bodily Pārājikas, two grounds for communal living; For two there is a break of night, two 'two-fingers' are laid down. Having struck oneself, by how many is the Saṅgha split? How many are the first offenses here, how many acts by declaration? Having struck oneself twice, by two is the Saṅgha split; Two are the first offenses here, two acts by declaration. In taking life, how many offenses? How many are the pārājika by speech? How many are said to be by revealing? Or how many by acting as a go-between? In taking life, three offenses; Pārājika by speech are three; Revealing is said to be three; Or acting as a go-between is three. How many persons should not be ordained? How many collections of acts? How many are said to be destroyed? How many have a single utterance? Three persons should not be ordained, three collections of acts; Destroyed are said to be three, for three there is a single utterance. In taking what is not given, how many offenses? How many causes for sexual intercourse? For one who cuts, how many offenses? How many causes for discarding? Seeing what advantages, one Should teach for the faith of others; How many suspended ones are spoken of, how many right practices? Seeing eight benefits, should teach for the faith of others; Three suspended ones are spoken of, forty-three right practices. In how many instances is there false speech, how many are called supreme? How many are to be confessed, and for how many is there confession? In five instances is there false speech, fourteen are called supreme; Twelve are to be confessed, and for four is there confession. Of how many factors is false speech, how many are Uposatha factors? How many are factors of messengership, how many are practices of sectarians? Of eight factors is false speech, eight are Uposatha factors; Eight are factors of messengership, eight are practices of sectarians. Of how many recitations is ordination, for how many should one rise up? For how many should a seat be given, by how many is a bhikkhunī advised? Of eight recitations is ordination, for eight should one rise up; For eight should a seat be given, by eight is a bhikkhunī advised. For how many is there expulsion, for how many is there a grave offense? And for how many is there no offense, for all is there one ground. For one is there expulsion, for four is there a grave offense; And for four is there no offense, for all is there one ground. How many are grounds for resentment, by how many is the Sangha split? How many here are initial offenses, how many are acts by declaration? Nine are grounds for resentment, by nine is the Sangha split; Nine here are initial offenses, nine are acts by declaration. How many persons should not be saluted, nor with folded hands? For how many is there a wrong-doing, how many are ways of wearing robes? Ten persons should not be saluted, nor with folded hands; For ten is there a wrong-doing, ten are ways of wearing robes. For how many who have completed the Rains Retreat, should a robe be given here? For how many, sir, should it be given, and for how many should it not be given?
