They reported this matter to the Blessed One… …“Monks, various improper behaviors should not be engaged in. Whoever engages in them should be dealt with according to the Dhamma.” At that time, when Venerable Uruvelakassapa had gone forth, the Sangha had acquired many metal utensils, wooden utensils, and earthenware utensils. Then it occurred to the monks, “What did the Blessed One…” What is allowed, what is not allowed? What wooden articles are allowed, what are not allowed? What earthen articles are allowed, what are not allowed? They reported this matter to the Blessed One. Then the Blessed One, on account of this incident, on account of this matter, gave a Dhamma talk and addressed the bhikkhus: "I allow, bhikkhus, all metal articles except weapons; all wooden articles except armchairs, settees, wooden bowls, and wooden sandals; all earthen articles except those made by a potter's wheel and those made by a potter's hand." The Fifth Chapter on Minor Matters. Its summary: On trees, on posts, on walls, on attics, with fragrant threads; Entering, a wrestling mat, itch, old age, and broad-handed. Also a creeper, a scab, a necklace should not be worn; A waist-band, a sash, an armlet, a hand ornament, a ring. Long hair, a hood, a hand, rice-gruel, water, oil; Mirrors, leaf-colors, ointments, rubbing powders. They smear body-paint, and face-paint, both of them; Eye-disease, a peak, a long, out-of-tune sound. With mango-slices, a snake-charmer, and sandalwood; Various roots of leaves, gold, thick wrinkles. Colorful, soiled, foul-smelling, in the heat they burst, dirt; Equipment, grass, cloth, a garland, and a small basket. A bag, a shoulder-strap, and also binding threads; On pegs, on beds, on stools, on laps, on umbrellas, salutations. Gourd-pots, skull-heads, moving things, a receiver; A splitting stick, gold, on leaves, slices, and a tube. Fermented flour, a stream, beeswax, a small boat; A cut ear, unevenly bound, and a courtyard, a threshold. A bud, a useless thread, an unwashed heel, sandals; On a finger, a receiver, a small bag, a tied bag. In the open air, low ground, a heap, and they are destroyed; Fallen grass-dust, plastered and smeared. White and black colors, preparation, and red ochre; Garland-work, creeper-work, makara-tooth panels. Robe-pole. And a rope, the Vinayaka allowed; Having abandoned, they depart, and the Kathina breaks. It is unwound even on the wall, they go taking their bowls; A bag and a binding string, and having tied sandals. And a sandal-bag, and a shoulder-strap string; Water-strainer cloth, unsuitable on the path. A water-strainer, two bhikkhus, the sage went to Vesali; A stick, a mat there, he allowed a strainer. By mosquitoes, well-prepared, many ailments and Jīvaka; A walking-place, a hot-bath house, uneven, with low ground. Three piles are destroyed, a railing for the stairs; In the open air, grass powder, plastered and smeared. And they sleep for four months, and a felt rug he should not use; Sprinkled, a small pot, eating, they should turn one. The old Bodhi did not step, a pot, a clearing broom; Gravel and a floor, and foam, a foot-scraper. Irrelevant talk, magic, Threw auspicious signs, and ate. Wind-disease, and it spoils, Bad smell, painful sandals. They are ashamed of the bad smell of clothes, And they do here and there. Bad smell, they fall into the well, And by accumulation on high ground. Arm for holding stairs at the end, And pain, sandals. Outside, trough and wood, And an uncovered pot. Latrine, and door, And a back-rest. Upper part of a mortar, And a wick, monkey's head. Needle-joined bolt-hole, And a winding-hole. Rope, plastered and unplastered, And white color, black. Garland-work, creeper-work, Sea-monster, five-striped. Robe-pole and rope, Dilapidated wall. And likewise in the store-room, Sandy soil, split stone. Remains the drain, And also a pot, a lid. Suffering, shame, a covering, And they practiced misconduct. He allowed metal vessels, Except for weapons. Except for a folding bed, And a wooden bowl, sandals. All wooden articles, Allowed. The Great Sage knew. Excluding Kataka and the potter, the Tathāgata, All clay vessels, the compassionate one allowed. If the explanation of a matter, is similar to a previous one; That too, in the summary, by method, one should understand. Thus, a thousand matters, in the Vinaya, in the minor matters; For the establishment of the True Dhamma, and for the support of the virtuous. Well-trained, a holder of the Vinaya, benevolent, very virtuous; An illuminator, wise, worthy of veneration, very learned indeed. The Chapter on Minor Matters is concluded.
