Sitting to one side, Jīvaka Komārabhacca said to the Blessed One: 'Has the Blessed One purged, venerable sir?' 'I have purged, Jīvaka.' 'Here, venerable sir, as I was leaving the gatehouse, it occurred to me: 'I have given the Blessed One thirty purges. The Tathāgata's body is afflicted with humors. He will not purge the Blessed One thirty times, he will purge the Blessed One twenty-nine times. Moreover, the Blessed One will bathe after purging. He will purge the bathed Blessed One once. Thus, the Blessed One's thirty purges will be complete.' Let the Blessed One bathe, venerable sir, let the Sugata bathe.' Then the Blessed One bathed in warm water. He purged the bathed Blessed One once. Thus, the Blessed One's thirty purges were complete. Then Jīvaka Komārabhacca said to the Blessed One: 'Until, venerable sir, the Blessed One's body is restored, let there be a gruel-offering.' The story of the thirty purges is finished. 210. The Story of the Request for a Boon 337. Then the Blessed One's body was restored in no long time. Then Jīvaka Komārabhacca took that pair of Siveyyaka cloths and approached the Blessed One, and having approached, he bowed to the Blessed One and having greeted him, sat down to one side. Seated to one side, Jīvaka Komārabhacca then said to the Blessed One: "I beg one boon of the Blessed One, venerable sir." "Tathāgatas have passed beyond boons, Jīvaka." "That which is proper, venerable sir, and that which is blameless." "Speak, Jīvaka." "The Blessed One, venerable sir, is a wearer of rag-robes, and so is the Saṅgha of bhikkhus. This pair of Sīveyyaka cloths, venerable sir, was sent to me by King Pajjota— among many cloths, among many pairs of cloths, among many hundreds of pairs of cloths, among many thousands of pairs of cloths, among many hundreds of thousands of pairs of cloths, it is the foremost, the best, the most excellent, the supreme, the most distinguished. May the Blessed One, venerable sir, accept this pair of Sīveyyaka cloths from me; and may he permit householder-robes for the Saṅgha of bhikkhus." The Blessed One accepted the pair of Sīveyyaka cloths. Then the Blessed One instructed, encouraged, inspired, and gladdened Jīvaka Komārabhacca with a Dhamma talk. Then Jīvaka Komārabhacca, having been instructed, encouraged, inspired, and gladdened by the Blessed One with a Dhamma talk, rose from his seat, greeted the Blessed One, circumambulated him respectfully, and departed. Then the Blessed One, on account of this incident, on account of this matter, having given a Dhamma talk, addressed the bhikkhus: "I permit, bhikkhus, householder-robes. Whoever wishes, let him be a wearer of rag-robes. Whoever wishes, let him accept householder-robes. I commend contentment with either, bhikkhus." The people in Rājagaha heard: "Indeed, householder-robes have been permitted by the Blessed One for the bhikkhus." And those people were delighted, overjoyed: "Now we shall give gifts, we shall perform meritorious deeds, since householder-robes have been permitted by the Blessed One for the bhikkhus." In one day, many thousands of robes arose in Rājagaha. The people of the countryside heard: "Indeed, householder-robes have been permitted by the Blessed One for the bhikkhus." is allowed." And those people were delighted, overjoyed – "Now indeed we shall give gifts, we shall make merit, since the Blessed One has allowed householders' robes for the bhikkhus." And in the countryside, in a single day, many thousands of robes arose. Now at that time a cloak had arisen for the Sangha. They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "I allow, bhikkhus, a cloak." A silk cloak had arisen. They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "I allow, bhikkhus, a silk cloak." A rug had arisen. They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "I allow, bhikkhus, a rug." Then the Blessed One instructed Jīvaka Komārabhacca with a Dhamma talk… (and he) departed after circumambulating. Some bhikkhus obtained rag-robes, some bhikkhus did not obtain them. Those bhikkhus who did not obtain them said thus: "Friends, give us a share too." They said thus: "Friends, we will not give you a share. Why did you not obtain them?" They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "I allow, bhikkhus, that a share should be given unwillingly to those who went together." Now at that time, many bhikkhus were traveling on a road in the Kosala country. They made an agreement and went to the charnel ground for rag-robes. Some bhikkhus obtained rag-robes, some bhikkhus did not obtain them. Those bhikkhus who did not obtain them said thus: "Friends, give us a share too." They said thus: "Friends, we will not give you a share. Why did you not obtain them?" They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "I allow, bhikkhus, that a share should be given unwillingly to those who went having made an agreement." The discourse on seeking rag-robes is finished. 213. The discourse on the appointment of a robe-receiver. 342. Now at that time, people came to the monastery bringing robes. Not finding a receiver, they took them back. Few robes arose. They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "I allow, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu endowed with five qualities..." to appoint a robe-receiver – who would not go by desire, would not go by hatred, would not go by delusion, would not go by fear, and would know what has been received and what has not. And thus, monks, should he be appointed. First, the bhikkhu should be asked; having asked, a competent and able bhikkhu should inform the Saṅgha – ‘‘May the Saṅgha, venerable sirs, listen to me. If it is suitable for the Saṅgha, the Saṅgha may appoint the bhikkhu named so-and-so as the robe-receiver. This is the motion. ‘‘May the Saṅgha, venerable sirs, listen to me. The Saṅgha appoints the bhikkhu named so-and-so as the robe-receiver. If the appointment of the bhikkhu named so-and-so as robe-receiver is agreeable to any venerable one, let him be silent; if it is not agreeable, let him speak. ‘‘The bhikkhu named so-and-so has been appointed by the Saṅgha as the robe-receiver. It is agreeable to the Saṅgha, therefore it is silent, thus do I hold it.’’ Now at that time, the bhikkhus who were robe-receivers, having received the robes, abandoned them right there and departed. The robes were lost. They reported this matter to the Blessed One. ‘‘I allow, monks, to appoint a bhikkhu endowed with five qualities as a robe-depositor – who would not go by desire, would not go by hatred, would not go by delusion, would not go by fear,
