8. Methods for Settling Disputes Now, venerable sirs, these are the seven methods for settling disputes, Rules that come up for recitation. 655. For the calming and settling of disputes that have arisen, and will arise: a verdict in the presence (of both parties) should be given, a verdict of mindfulness should be given, a verdict of unbewilderedness should be given, it should be carried out by admission, by majority vote, by the declaration of depravity, and by covering with grass. Recited, venerable sirs, are the seven methods for settling disputes. Concerning them, venerable sirs, I ask you: "Are you pure in this?" A second time I ask you: "Are you pure in this?" A third time I ask you: "Are you pure in this?" You are pure in this, venerable sirs, therefore you are silent. Thus do I take it. The Methods for Settling Disputes are concluded. Recited, venerable sirs, is the introduction; recited are the four rules of defeat; recited are the thirteen rules entailing suspension; recited are the two undetermined rules; recited are the thirty rules of expiation with forfeiture; recited are the ninety-two rules of expiation; recited are the four rules of acknowledgment; recited are the rules of training; recited are the seven methods for settling disputes. This much of the Blessed One's teachings, included in the discourses, comes up for recitation every half-month. Therein, all should train in harmony, with joy, and without dispute.
