While one sings, they will dance; while one sings, they will sing; while one sings, they will play instruments; while one sings, they will frolic. While one plays, they will dance; while one plays... They will sing, while playing, they will play, while playing, they will dance. While dancing, they will dance, while dancing, they will sing, while dancing, they will play, while dancing, they will dance. At eight-square they will play, at ten-square they will play. They will shout, they will clap their hands, they will wrestle, with fists they will fight. And in the middle of the arena, spreading out a robe, they will say to a dancer: "Dance here, sister!" They will show their foreheads, they will perform various improper actions! This, monks, is not for the appeasement of the unappeased... ...having censured, having given a discourse on the Dhamma, Sārip... called out to the chief Moggallāna: "Go, Sāriputta, go to Kīṭāgiri and perform the act of expulsion from Kīṭāgiri for the bhikkhus Assaji and Punabbasu. These are your co-residents." "How, Venerable Sir, shall we perform the act of expulsion from Kīṭāgiri for the bhikkhus Assaji and Punabbasu? Those bhikkhus are fierce and harsh." "Then, Sāriputta, go with many bhikkhus." "Yes, Venerable Sir," Sāriputta and Moggallāna replied to the Blessed One. "And thus, bhikkhus, it should be done. First, the bhikkhus Assaji and Punabbasu should be admonished. Having admonished, they should be reminded. Having reminded, an offense should be charged. Having charged an offense, a competent and capable bhikkhu should inform the Saṅgha: "May the Saṅgha, Venerable Sir, hear me. These bhikkhus Assaji and Punabbasu are defilers of families, of evil conduct. Their evil conducts are seen and heard. And families are corrupted by them, are seen and heard. If it is suitable for the Saṅgha, the Saṅgha should perform the act of expulsion from Kīṭāgiri for the bhikkhus Assaji and Punabbasu – 'The bhikkhus Assaji and Punabbasu should not reside in Kīṭāgiri.' This is the motion. "May the Saṅgha, Venerable Sir, hear me. These bhikkhus Assaji and Punabbasu are defilers of families, of evil conduct. Their evil conducts are seen and heard. And families are corrupted by them, are seen and heard. The Saṅgha as He performs the act of expulsion for the monks Assaji and Punabbasu from Kīṭāgiri – 'The monks Assaji and Punabbasu are not to dwell in Kīṭāgiri.' If it is agreeable to that venerable one that the act of expulsion of the monks Assaji and Punabbasu from Kīṭāgiri be performed – 'The monks Assaji and Punabbasu are not to dwell in Kīṭāgiri,' he should be silent; if it is not agreeable to him, he should speak. A second time I state this matter… A third time I state this matter – May the Sangha, venerable sirs, listen to me… he should speak. The Sangha has performed the act of expulsion of the monks Assaji and Punabbasu from Kīṭāgiri – 'The monks Assaji and Punabbasu are not to dwell in Kīṭāgiri.' It is agreeable to the Sangha, therefore it is silent, thus I hold this to be. 435. Then indeed the assembly of monks led by Sāriputta and Moggallāna, having gone to Kīṭāgiri, performed the act of expulsion of the monks Assaji and Punabbasu from Kīṭāgiri – 'The monks Assaji and Punabbasu are not to dwell in Kīṭāgiri.' They, having been expelled by the Sangha, did not behave properly, did not humble themselves, did not conduct themselves for reconciliation, did not ask forgiveness from the monks, they abused and reviled, they went astray through desire, through hatred, through delusion, through fear, they even departed, they even wandered off. Those monks who were of few wishes… they complained, grumbled, and criticized – "How can it be that the monks Assaji and Punabbasu, having been expelled by the Sangha... having been done, they will not behave properly, they will not show humility, they will not make amends, they will not ask forgiveness from the monks, they will insult, they will revile, they will be led by desire, they will be led by hatred, they will be led by delusion, they will be led by fear, they will even depart, they will even wander away!” Then those monks, having rebuked the monks Assaji and Punabbasu in many ways, reported this matter to the Blessed One… …“Is it true, monks, that the monks Assaji and Punabbasu, having had the act of banishment performed by the Sangha, do not behave properly… …do even wander away?” “It is true, Blessed One.” The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked them… …And thus, monks, you should recite this rule of training: 436. Now if a monk dwells near a certain village or market town, a corruptor of families, of evil conduct. His evil conduct is seen and heard, and families are corrupted by him, are seen and heard. That monk should be told by the monks thus: “Venerable sir, you are a corruptor of families, of evil conduct. Venerable sir, your evil conduct is seen and heard, and families are corrupted by you, are seen and heard. Depart, venerable sir, from this dwelling. Enough of your dwelling here.” And if that monk, being told thus by the monks, should say to those monks: “The monks are led by desire, the monks are led by hatred, the monks are led by delusion, the monks are led by fear, they banish some for such an offense, "they do not expel some." That bhikkhu should be addressed by the bhikkhus thus: 'Venerable sir, do not speak thus. Bhikkhus are not led by desire. Bhikkhus are not led by ill-will. Bhikkhus are not led by delusion. Bhikkhus are not led by fear. Indeed, Venerable sir, you are a corruptor of families, of evil conduct. Indeed, Venerable sir, your evil conduct is both seen and heard. And families corrupted by you are both seen and heard. Depart, Venerable sir, from this dwelling. Enough of your dwelling here.' If that bhikkhu, being thus addressed by the bhikkhus, should still cling to it, that bhikkhu should be admonished by the bhikkhus up to the third time for its relinquishment. If, being admonished up to the third time, he relinquishes it, that is good; if he does not relinquish it, it is a Saṅghādisesa offence. 437. A bhikkhu, however, in some village or market town— a village, a market town, a city, is both a village and a market town. "Dwells dependent on" means that robes, almsfood, lodgings, requisites for the sick, and medicines are tied to that place. "Family" means four families: the warrior family, the brahmin family, the merchant family, the worker family. "Corruptor of families" means he corrupts families with flowers or with fruits, with powders or with clay, with tooth-sticks or with bamboo, with medical treatment or with messages carried by foot. "Of evil conduct" means he plants flower-shrubs or has them planted, he waters them or has them watered, he picks them or has them picked, he strings them or has them strung. They are seen and heard, those who are face-to-face, they see, those who are out of sight, they hear. And families are corrupted by him: having been faithful before, because of him they become faithless, having been pleased, they become displeased. They are seen and heard, those who are face-to-face, they see, those who are out of sight, they hear. That bhikkhu means that bhikkhu who corrupts families. By bhikkhus means by other bhikkhus. Those who see, those who hear. They should be told: "Indeed, Venerable Sir, you are a corrupter of families, of evil conduct. Indeed, Venerable Sir, your evil conducts are seen and heard. And families corrupted by you are seen and heard. Depart, Venerable Sir, from this dwelling. Enough of your dwelling here." And if that bhikkhu, being told by the bhikkhus, should say this to those bhikkhus: "Bhikkhus are led by desire, and bhikkhus are led by hatred, and bhikkhus are led by delusion, and bhikkhus are led by fear. For such an offense, they expel some, they do not expel others." That bhikkhu means that bhikkhu who has been dealt with by an act. By bhikkhus means by other bhikkhus. Those who see, those who hear. They should be told: "Venerable Sir, do not speak thus. Bhikkhus are not led by desire, nor are bhikkhus led by hatred, nor are bhikkhus led by delusion, nor are bhikkhus led by fear. Indeed, Venerable Sir, you are a corrupter of families, of evil conduct. Indeed, Venerable Sir, your evil conducts are seen and heard. And families corrupted by you are seen and heard. Depart, Venerable Sir, from this... from this residence. Enough of your dwelling here.” A second time he should be spoken to. A third time he should be spoken to. If he relinquishes, that is good. If he does not relinquish, there is an offense of wrong-doing. Having heard, if they do not speak, there is an offense of wrong-doing. That bhikkhu, even if dragged into the midst of the Saṅgha, should be spoken to: “Venerable sir, do not speak thus.
