Some are ripened by fear. Some are ripened by liberation. Some are ripened by desire. Some are ripened by anger. Some are ripened by delusion. Some are ripened by strife. Thus it is. Some are because of having self. Some are because of manifest conduct. Some are because of pacification. Some are because of increase. Some are because of power. Some are because of ultimate completion. Some are made to ripen by the sound that causes the experience of suffering from the three poisons. Some are by the sound that causes the experience of happiness. Some are by the sound that causes the non-experience of happiness. Some renounce the enjoyment of existence and practice severe asceticism. Some take up the enjoyment of existence and indulge in frivolous activities. Some are by the method of restraint. Some are by the method of not clinging to anything. Some are by the method of accomplishing activities. Some are by generosity. Some are by pleasant speech. Some are by harmony. Some are by conduct. Some are by completely giving internally. Some are by completely giving externally. Some are by giving up everything. Some are made to ripen by clinging to everything. Some are by distraction. Some are by truly abiding within. Some are by restraining desires. Some are by indulging in desires. Thus, they are made to ripen by acting according to different inclinations, and by showing different forms, sounds, views, methods, desires, and meanings. It should be understood that those lords of Lanka act by means of skillful methods.
